Hello! My name is Nathan. I'm a graduate of the Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Humanities, emphasis in English. I also teach Pre-Calculus, Physics, and Geometry for Biola Youth Academics.

When I tutor, my intent is to help the student learn how to solve the problems rather than giving the answer to the student. If necessary, I will guide the student step-by-step through the process, but I try to help the student think on his/her own and to recognize correct ways to answer problems, write papers, or otherwise do excellent work.

I have learned from firsthand experience how difficult it is for a full-time teacher to come in and teach all of his or her students in a way that is helpful for their learning style. They just have too much to worry about, dealing with multiple classes of twenty to thirty students (sometimes more) every day. That's where I come in. As a one-on-one tutor, I can speak specifically to your or your student's needs and learning style in order to help him or her grasp the subject that much more easily. I love the feeling when a student finally understands a difficult concept, and work toward that realization in every lesson.

Some qualifications and background details, for the curious: in middle school, I participated in math competitions, primarily MathCounts, in which I was first place in the state of California in 8th grade. A few years later, I scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam in 10th grade. I also took AP Physics B and AP Physics C: Mechanics during my senior year, scoring a 5 on each of them, and got a 72 out of 80 on the Chemistry CLEP test.

In 9th grade, I took the old SAT and scored 1580, with an 800 on the Verbal section and a 780 on the Math section. As a senior in high school, I took the new SAT and scored 2330, with scores of 780 in Math, 780 in Verbal, and 770 in Writing.

I am currently writing a novel about time travel with a sequel or two planned, and I have a series of fantasy books on the back burner. I also sing with two choirs and go swing dancing on the side!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I first took Calculus in my freshman year of high school, and scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam in 10th grade. I've been tutoring Calculus ever since I graduated high school. Perhaps the best example of my experience here is when I helped one student get his yearly grade from an F to a B from the end of one semester to the end of the next.

Physics

I took AP Physics for the first time in 8th grade, as a student of the only middle school in the country to offer the course, at least at the time. I retook it on my own as a senior in high school in order to get college credit for the AP, scoring a 5 on both the AP Physics B and AP Physics C: Mechanics exams. Since then, I've tutored it for four or five years, and I also teach a Physics class for Biola Youth Academics.

SAT Math

I have had experience with the SAT going back to 7th grade with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, where I scored a 1270 (650 on Math). I took it the next two years as well, scoring a 1580 on the old SAT in 9th grade with a 780 in Math. I've also tutored all the levels of math that the SAT covers, and beyond, over the past five years, both through WyzAnt and outside.

SAT Reading

Though I am not affiliated with an SAT prep company like Princeton Review, I have had experience with the SAT going back to 7th grade with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, where I scored a 1270 (620 on Verbal). I took it the next two years as well, scoring a 1580 on the old SAT in 9th grade with a perfect 800 in Verbal. I was an English major in college and hope to be a successful fiction writer someday, and have years of experience with writing and reading comprehension, having graduated from the Torrey Honors Institute, a great books program at Biola University.

Great Physics Tutor — My son's test scores went from D's to B's after only 2 sessions. Nathan is a very patient and effective tutor. I would definitely not hesitate to use him again in the future. ...
