Hi, I am Mike. I have a Master's Degree in counseling and part of a PhD in leadership (still working on that one). I have taught middle school, high school, and college students for almost 30 years in a variety of settings, from college classrooms to church settings, from summer camps to corporate consulting. For the last twenty I have worked as a counselor, consultant, and personal life coach.
I try to be a little unorthodox in my teaching style. I believe that doing the same thing you have always done will get you the same thing it has always gotten you. So maybe it's time to try something different. I use hands-on, experience based learning. Before I try to teach a student anything I spend 2 - 3 sessions just getting to know them. I believe good tutoring, good students, and great human beings are formed through the process of healthy relationships, so I start there.
I am especially good with boys - I have six sons of my own. I can teach just about anything, but I prefer to teach people rather than topics. I have the most teaching experience in the areas of psychology, religion, and sociology. And I have to be honest - I am more interested in growing young people than I am in their achieving good grades. I believe that kids find their own way when championed, encouraged, coached, and equipped, so I focus on those areas.
I am good with people, especially younger ones. If I don't think I can significantly help a student, I will let you know in the first 2-3 sessions.
On a personal level, I love humor and use it often to teach. I engage with students in a way that can be life transforming. I am happily married and have two sons left at home. The whole family loves camping and backpacking, and I am into motorcycles, paragliding, outdoor anything, and adventures of any kind. I have led wilderness trips for years with all ages, climbing, backpacking, and mountaineering.
If you are looking for the conservative, please keep looking. If you want your student to learn a subject (and even more about life), give me a call.
