I have 19 years of experience teaching students as either an ESL assistant or Special Ed. assistant - from kindergarten through 9th grade. I enjoy working with students of all ages! Presently, I work at an elementary school as a special education assistant. My strengths are in Spanish, language, grammar and math. I really enjoy working with students one-on-one and love all different subject areas. I also taught a few of my own children at home for a short while.
I received my B.A. in Spanish from Western Illinois University and have been employed in school districts in Fresno, Hillsboro, Oregon, and Boise, Idaho. At age 16, I had the privilege of being an exchange student in Lima, Peru, living with a host family. This is where I learned to speak Spanish and to love Hispanic culture. From 1977 to 1979, I worked for an international firm, translating incoming and outgoing correspondence. I've also taught elementary students in a total immersion program in which we did games, songs and activities completely in Spanish, without the students having any prior instruction in the language.
I have traveled to Honduras, Mexico and Costa Rica and worked as an interpreter for the school district in Boise and Central Unified. I was the resident interpreter at my last two schools, helping the School Resource Officer, nurse, assistant principal, attendance secretary, special ed. teachers and any parents who would show up at the schools and need assistance. I also served as an interpreter on two different mission trips for a church.
