I have 19 years of experience teaching students as either an ESL assistant or Special Ed. assistant - from kindergarten through 11th grade. I enjoy working with students of all ages! Presently, I work at a high school as a special education assistant. I support students who are in mainstream classes, but could use help in doing their assignments. The prior two years were spent in an elementary school. My strengths are in Spanish, language, grammar and math. I really enjoy working with students one-on-one and love all different subject areas. I also taught a few of my own children at home for a short while.

I received my B.A. in Spanish from Western Illinois University and have been employed in school districts in Fresno, Hillsboro, Oregon, and Boise, Idaho. At age 16, I had the privilege of being an exchange student in Lima, Peru, living with a host family. This is where I learned to speak Spanish and to love Hispanic culture. From 1977 to 1979, I worked for an international firm, translating incoming and outgoing correspondence. I've also taught elementary students in a total immersion program in which we did games, songs and activities completely in Spanish, without the students having any prior instruction in the language.

I have traveled to Honduras, Mexico and Costa Rica and worked as an interpreter for the school district in Boise and Central Unified. I was the resident interpreter at my last two schools, helping the School Resource Officer, nurse, assistant principal, attendance secretary, special ed. teachers and any parents who would show up at the schools and need assistance. I also served as an interpreter on two different mission trips for a church.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had 12 years' experience in academic settings and 29 years' experience in church settings working with students who have ADD/ADHD.

Algebra 1

I have assisted students with Algebra at the middle school level for seven years and presently am helping students in a Math Support class and a Curriculum Support class for 10th- and 11th-graders.

Aspergers

I was a one-on-one assistant with a student with Aspergers Syndrome for one school year and have worked with other students with this disability for many years in mostly the junior high school setting.

Autism

I have worked closely with students with Autism off and on for over 15 years in both elementary and junior high.

Bible Studies

I have personally studied the Bible for 41 years and have been actively involved in planting churches with my husband in the United States for 29 years.
I have also received training and taken classes through the mission agency with which we serve.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked for six years with elementary students in an official capacity as an assistant and a Spanish teacher of Kindergarten and 1st graders. However, I have also been a volunteer as a parent for another six years, assisting students with reading, math and language.

Elementary Math

Having taught students in junior high for almost 10 years and elementary students for eight, I am able to tutor up to 8th grade level, including algebra 1. Presently, I enjoy teaching elementary students and use different strategies to teach concepts. It is rewarding to see a student comprehend after initially not "getting it."

English

Upon entering college, I was able to take a proficiency test and skip the required freshman English course. Knowing a second language has also helped me immensely in being familiar with grammar and syntax.

ESL/ESOL

Having learned another language (Spanish) has helped me to be aware of syntax, vocabulary and grammar so that I am able to assist others in improving their speaking, reading and writing of English.

Geography

Having been a Special Education Assistant at junior high schools for almost 10 years, I have experience assisting students in geography.

Microsoft Outlook

I am very familiar with Microsoft Outlook, having used it as my email client for years, and would be able to assist someone with its use.

Phonics

I taught three of my children to read, using phonics and whole language skills. I have also been working with students in an academic setting and as a volunteer for over 20 years, and am very aware of etymology due to having learned a second language (Spanish).

Reading

I have helped students in reading one-on-one for about 17 years---from ages Kindergarten through 9th grade. I also taught three of my own children to read.

Spanish

I received a B.A. in Spanish from Western Illinois University. From 1977 to 1979, I worked for an international firm, translating incoming and outgoing correspondence. I've also worked as an interpreter for two different school districts and worked as an ESL assistant.
I have had the privilege of being an exchange student in Lima, Peru at the age of 16 for three months and traveled as an adult to Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica. When teaching elementary students in a total immersion program, I used songs, games and activities speaking Spanish only, without the students having any prior instruction in the language.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is one of my greatest strengths. Knowing a second language has helped me take notice of the roots (bases) of words and I always enjoy figuring out from which language a word is derived.
