I have over 20 years' experience with private tutoring. I earned a teaching degree from University of Pittsburgh and have qualifications to teach any subject in grades k-8. During this time, I have researched various teaching methods in order to reach all types of learners. I am able to differentiate instruction to suit each child. I specialize in intensive phonics instruction for students who need help in making sense of reading and spelling. This method of instruction lends itself well to students who are struggling with early reading, dyslexia, or learning English as a second language. Rather than learning the basic phonics taught in the elementary schools, children will be taught all 72 sounds that make up the English language. This method makes sense to the children and they are finally able to apply concrete rules to decode words.
In addition to intensive phonics instruction, I have a love for teaching reading. I focus on reading fluency, comprehension and critical thinking. In order to keep the children interested and working, the materials are widely varied. The children work for approximately 10 minutes on one task, then switch to another. Each tutoring session will include a lesson plan, progress report and recommendations for weekly work.
Finally, I have several methods I use for teaching elementary math. If students can count forwards and backwards to/from 10 they can learn all addition and subtraction math facts with little trouble. I use hands-on materials, special "tricks" and music to teach math. Great success can be had once individual strengths, weakness and learning styles are identified.
I am firm, yet friendly. My students enjoy tutoring and are eager to come back. I look forward to working with parents and children to make learning successful for every child!
