While it is important to "check the right boxes" on tests and in filling out applications, as a tutor, I believe it is important to "think outside the box". While I am fully supportive of the child's teachers, I hope to provide that something extra that the child needs to be successful in school, work and life. I work to ascertain what that something extra might be by finding out what the child loves to do, and in some cases, does not love to do. I have the child (I have tutored high school and college students, so far, but would be happy to also tutor middle school and elementary children) read out loud, which reveals a lot about their comprehension, speed and vocal agility; I took private voice lessons for many years and I graduated from Sac State in 2010 with a Major in Theatre and a Minor in Dance. My favorite subject to tutor is English (reading, writing, study skills and test-taking), but I have also tutored first-year high school French, which I also love! In my senior year at Sac State, I assisted my Dance Professor with grading 90 essays/critiques, which taught me a lot about how to encourage students to write clearly and objectively.
