I have a natural love of teaching, enhanced by lots of training and experience over several decades, to a high level of expertise. I first tutored while in college and have taught and counseled children, teens and adults in many settings since then. From Master's and PhD courses on learning and teaching processes, human development, etc., I can hone in quickly on a student's skills and challenges. I assess key areas such as learning best by:
- Seeing (video and/or reading)
- Hands-on involvement (notes, etc.)
- Balance of the above
I set up an approach and techniques to use based on the individual's style, overall abilities, etc. Additionally, I use certain tools like memorizing devices which work for almost anyone. I pay attention to proper pacing and to the type of reward system that means most to a given student. I work with that important line between comfort (and satisfaction in success) and challenge with what is not yet familiar or comfortable. Rightly engaged, I believe every person loves to learn!
My skills for English vocabulary, spelling, grammar and composition are strong, as I am a continual writer and sometime editor. These skills have been further enhanced by my study of other languages, including learning patterns and many word roots from Greek, German and Spanish (leaning on Latin).
My several years of graduate school, on top of bachelor's level writing of a multitude of papers, and then professional reports, business communications, etc., gives me both an academic and a practical approach that I convey to students rather than just one or the other, or the sole focus of creative writing.
My knack for math and science is at least as strong as for the verbal, literary area (my field of psychology employs a combination), and I enjoy working with basic to mid-level math, algebra and geometry. I can teach simplifying and speeding math calculations via mental math "shortcuts".
I particularly enjoy students who are eager to learn and want that extra edge that an experienced and well-educated person can add to both immediate studies and looking ahead in their education. I also enjoy the student who may have some challenges he or she hasn't yet learned to surmount but is eager to not let anything derail them from a life of success and joyful contribution.
