Hello:
My name is Larry and I will tell you a little about myself. I worked for San Diego Unified School District for 15 years. In the beginning of my teaching career, I worked as a substitute for 3 years. I was able to work every day and if I remember correctly, I worked at sixty-seven different schools as a substitute. I was very lucky to experience the difference in ages and grades on a daily basis. On certain days, I would be called to elementary schools for a few days and then I would get a call to go to Middle schools and High Schools. I never knew from week to week were I would be teaching. Then one day in 1997, I received a call asking me if I wanted to work with older students, whose ages ranged from 18-22 years old. By chance or luck- however we define it- I found my niche and I really enjoyed these students. After a couple of months I was asked by one of the supervisors if I wanted to work permanently at the school. It was called Transition Resources for Adult Continuing Education (TRACE). I stayed with TRACE right up until June of 2005. In September of 2005, I transferred to Pacific Beach Middle School and I stayed there until June of 2008. The subjects I taught were the 3R'S', Reading, Writing and Mathematics, along with Computers for today's markets. At the end of the 2008 school year, I resigned from San Diego Unified School District. I had always wanted to explore other parts of the world and it happened that I was offered a chance to go to China and teach English. In September I left San Diego, California for Xiaogan, China.
I have enjoyed meeting and working with students and teachers from around the world since 1995. Recently, I was teaching Oral English,Writing and Phonics to Chinese students at Xiaogan university. At different times during my stay in Xiaogan, I was asked to be a Judge for the ESL, IELTS Exams. I was living and working in Xiaogan from September 2009 to July, 2011. I now have returned to Escondido, California where I was born and raised.
I had a great time and wonderful experience in Xiaogan. Now, at this point in my life, I am ready to move on to the next phase. I have been looking and searching for something different in education. I believe that tutoring students will be something that I will be very good at. One of the most important aspects of being a good teacher/tutor is having excellent communication skills, along with being organized at all times. I believe I have these skills in me, and the interaction between myself and the students is a key to developing a good bond for learning, long with my other education, through life on a daily basis, to bring harmony to the students.
I would like to say to new students wanting too be a SCIENTIST.Especially the ones that are very much interested in the field of Marine Biology. I was lucky enough to be able to travel to different parts of the country and work with Squid and octopus. Toward the end of my career I again was lucky and published a paper along with Bill Summers on the Cultivation of Rossia pacifica. berry 1911. Shannon Point Marine Center. Western Washington University, Bellingham Wa, 98225.
Journal of Cephalopod Biology 1989. I still am interested in the field at this time, it is too bad that I am not longer working in it. It will always be in my heart and I will continue to keep track of the publications and breakthroughs in the field.
