My name is Sharon and part of my philosophy of education is: "All students can learn." As a retired teacher, I have 30 years of professional teaching experience in both the private and public sectors. I have taught regular classroom, as well as ESL classes where I was responsible for teaching all core subjects to second language learners. I have seven years teaching experience in the summer school setting. This involved teaching smaller groups of students with emphasis on language skills that needed fine tuning in order for them to achieve more success during the regular school year. Additionally, for five consecutive years, I managed the entire after school tutoring program at the elementary school where I taught full-time.
I have extensive one-on-one tutoring experience with students ranging from kindergarten through grade 10. The language arts subjects are my areas of greatest expertise. I have been trained in multiple phonics teaching methods; including Johhny Can Spell,Read, and Write. I have many years of experience in identifying student learning styles and have the ability to adapt my tutoring to meet each learning style. I had the good fortune to be selected for training in the Intel Teach to the Future program that was put into place by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Therefore, I have the skills needed to seamlessly integrate technology into project based teaching and learning. I very much enjoy helping students create projects. Often creating projects gives students the incentive to want to master basic skills such as spelling, reading, and writing.
I am a published curriculum author and have strong composition writing skills; this includes teaching these skills to students. I am available to tutor students, in all English Language Arts curriculum aspects, from kindergarten through high school; including GED preparation. I will also tutor younger elementary students in math, but only kindergarten through third grade. When looking for a tutor, please consider Mrs. Henderson. I have the skill sets necessary to build confidence in the students in your family who wish to achieve more academic success. It has been such a pleasure getting to know Sharon. She's been tutoring my seven year old daughter for several months now and my daughter looks forward to every session. Sharon truly cares about children and it shows. I would recommend her without hesitation. Thank you, Sharon, for all of your hard work!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a student of the Bible for over 40 years. I regularly attend worship, Bible class, and engage in daily Bible study at home. I have taught children's classes from cradle roll through eighth grade. I have written and published a two year Bible school curriculum for children ranging from age five through age 10. This curriculum was translated into Mandarin Chinese. I taught the curriculum in English and Chinese prior to publication. I have also taught ladies' Bible classes, and been the main speaker at Ladies' Day events at churches. I am a former Taiwan missionary, speak Mandarin Chinese, and have taught Chinese childrens' and ladies' classes.
I hold lifetime teaching credentials for kindergarten through 8th grade. In the regular classroom, I have taught all subjects in kindergarten and first grades. I have been homeroom teacher for fourth grade and sixth grade teaching all language arts subjects, as well as social studies. As an ESL classroom teacher, I taught pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students in all core language arts subjects, as well as social studies. Additionally, I taught science vocabulary and helped students with science projects. I hold lifetime Intel Teach to the Future Master Teacher certification and am skilled in seamlessly integrating technology into project based student learning.
As a veteran teacher with over 30 years of experience in teaching ESL students from five different continents, I am highly qualified to teach a wide variety of students who wish to learn the English language. My graduate coursework in ESL reflects a high GPA. Additionally, I passed the ESL certification test. I am an astute teacher who can determine which ESL teaching methods can best support various learning styles. I believe strongly in showing genuine respect for the culture represented by each student that chooses to either learn English or wishes to improve English language skills. As an adult, I learned to speak Mandarin Chinese and therefore can relate to what students may be experiencing in the language learning journey. Also my own children grew up in a bilingual environment and I am familiar with the language learning process as it relates to family life. Having taught in the regular classroom, small group instruction for ESL students, and spent time tutoring one student at a time, I bring a wealth of experience to the language learning process. I genuinely enjoy working with students in the language learning process and sharing in the success of each one.
I have been trained in various phonics teaching methods, including 'Johnny Can Spell'. This is the method published by Alice Nine of Oregon, who used the Spaulding Method as a basis for teaching and preparing her publications. In 30 years of teaching experience, I have adapted various phonics approaches to meet the learning needs of individual students. These adaptations include large group, small group, and one-on-one tutoring settings. For five years I was in charge of the after school tutoring program in one of the schools where I taught. I have also taught in a team teaching/ tutoring setting involving phonics designed to help students in the decoding and spellings of English words.
I learned to speak Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, as an adult. Therefore, I have personal experience in correct enunciation and pronunciation. I understand the various issues involved in second language acquisition. I also have compassion regarding the importance of the students' feelings and frustrations in learning to communicate clearly when speaking a language other than the primary language. I hold multi-level ESL certification and have 30 years teaching experience in this field. I have been involved in public speaking engagements, such as speaking at various women's events. I am also experienced in making staff development presentations in the areas of second language acquisition and integrating technology seamlessly into project based teaching across the curriculum.
I worked my way through high school, college, and graduate studies by learning my own learning styles and how to be a successful student myself. I raised children who became successful students and life-long learners. I have taken many staff development courses in the area of study skills, learning to teach to all learning styles, and helping students understand their own specific learning styles. I helped my students develop strong test taking strategies. I taught in Title 1 schools in my school district, and lead my students to rank second in the entire district on national standardized tests and criterion referenced tests. My students' test scores were consistently second in the district, just a few points under the most affluent school in our district.
