This enthusiastic PhD scientist/mom is NEW to Wyzant and would love to help your K-12 son/daughter with their math and science. My professional degrees are in fields of biology but my passion is the pursuit and understanding of all areas of science. In 2010 I retired from 25 years in immunology research and biotech consulting in order to spend more time being a mom to my kids. As a bonus, I spend quite a bit of time doing homework with them. With the older child in 5th grade now, I’m finding much to my chagrin that in order to pass each next test in school, children this age are being pressured to memorize facts and phrases without any real understanding of the simple concepts underlying them. Not only is this boring and meaningless for the student but incredibly frustrating as well. Because without an understanding, even closely related questions will stump them all over again. Central to my approach is getting your student to grasp concepts in ways that are meaningful to them. It becomes a challenge they understand instead of meaningless memorization. More importantly, they are better prepared to meet similar challenges with insight and some sense of control instead of helpless befuddlement.
I’m very familiar with the current elementary school curricula in San Diego and can tutor any subject area K-6. I can cover all mathematics and science subject areas covered through middle school. This would include any earth sciences, natural sciences and introductory level physics and chemistry. Since my professional degrees are in the biological sciences I can tutor any high school, college and post-graduate level biology subject matter.
Lastly, I hold a current CNA certificate in the state of California. In accordance with state law, I have undergone mandatory FBI fingerprint check in addition to the DOJ fingerprint check as a pre-certification requirement.
