ADD/ADHD

Most of the tutoring I have done has been with students that have ADD and ADHD. My trainings and skills have given me a 100% success rate. I have a special education credential and worked as a resource specialist for San Diego City Schools. The classes I have taken at UCSD and SDSU include Teaching Special Populations, Mainstreaming ADD and ADHD, RSP Instructional Decision Making, ENCORE Training, WJIII Assessment Training, and Identifying Students at Risk. More importantly the reason for my high success rate is the creativity I use to teach these active students. Instead of trying to change the student to fit the system, I change the system to fit the student. So after a detailed assessment to understand the student’s learning style I build a personalized learning portfolio. Then to ensure academic success I scaffold and tune the lessons to all three modalities. When a lesson plan has elements of visual, auditory, and kinetic learning it will connect to the student’s learning pathways. Scaffolding ensures that all students build confidence with each progressing level of difficulty. My students succeed because their time with me is centered to their needs and abilities.

CBEST

I took the CBEST myself and know I can help you pass it easily. I know the types of questions and what to study.

Elementary (K-6th)

10 years of teaching experience in many different avenues empowers me with the skills needed to help your student succeed. I have a California Multiple Subject Credential, and Montessori Training. I have worked in a bilingual classroom with a BCLAD Credential and as a resource Specialist with a Special Ed. Credential. I have subbed at all grade levels and I am familiar with the standards for each. With reading specialist qualifications, I have been tutoring for 4 years in grades K-12. I carry various California state certifications that include RICA (reading specialization), ELD (English Language development for second language learners), WJII tests (academic assessments) and MAPS (math assessments). As a Montessori teacher at Encinitas Country Day School my duties included teaching a full 2nd grade classroom in all curriculum, with before and after school reading and math individual support. As a resource specialist for San Diego School District my duties included identifying at risk students, organizing student support team, writing and implementing BSP (behavior support plan), curriculum support, identifying students at risk and IEP (individual educational plan). I have a sincere joy for learning new innovative ways to teach and learn. This last spring I attended UCSD taking classes in differentiated learning styles, working with special populations, English as a second language, health, and technology. With all of these qualifications I believe the most important one is that I sincerely care about my students. I teach the whole student. This is my mission statement and I live by it.
“Our young scholars are not vessels to fill up
but rather vessels to lovingly make ready
to sail on the adventure of life.”

Phonics

The first sounds a child hears is the basis for speaking. It is the same with phonics. Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes. Students learn the individual sounds and put them together to form words and phrases. There are many excellent techniques for teaching phonics. My favorite is the Montessori Method because it incorporates manipulatives and building symbols and letters. The little student can hold a toy horse or house, say the word and then find the letter “h” to match the sound. I take the basic “hooked on phonics” and incorporate it into my own program. I use phonics games, worksheets, flashcards and online activities then tailor this to match the students learning style and ability.

Special Needs

I have over ten years experience working with special needs students, in both public and private schools. I am a California credentialed teacher and have worked as a Resource Specialist and have been certificated. I know of tests and assessments that will help us pinpoint areas of strengths and weaknesses. There are also study skills and special techniques I have learned. I have many resources and tools that I am trained in for your student's success.

Speech

I am a credentialed teacher, published author and have taught speech for over three years as a RSP in schools and the private sector. I have had students that have seen great success; they would be happy to send letters of recommendation. I make custom lesson plans after I do an initial assessment so you get exactly what you need.

Study Skills

I am a fully credentialed teacher. I have worked as a resource specialist, Montessori teacher, and in bilingual classrooms. Study skills are essential to learning. Most importantly one needs organization. Also self-knowledge of one's modality of learning, such audio, visual or kinesthetic can make a difference. A person needs to know what environment is best for their learning style; some people work best with music in the background or the correct lighting; there are many factors to study skills. The right materials are essential to organization. I use formal and informal assessments that allow the student to explore their own personal study skills for success.
