WyzAnt has recognized me, for the third year in a row, as one of their "Top 50 Tutors" in the nation, based on my teaching experience and high ratings from students and parents. I have excellent mathematical skills, and am a very able teacher of English, ESL, US and European history, plus other subjects, and tend to bring student performance up by one or two letter grades.

My best strength as a teacher is listening very carefully to each individual student in order learn how to best aid his or her progress. Other strengths are good powers of exposition, demonstration, and resourcefulness.

My favorite thing about teaching is when a student solves a problem or has an idea. It is tremendously fulfilling for me to see that I helped with any step in scholastic achievement. I want the student to succeed.

Shakespeare specialist.

My background is in university education, tutoring, publishing, exhibition design for museums and galleries, and I'm well known photographer who has exhibited internationally.

Art History

I took extensive art history courses at the University of Rome, Italy, and also for my BA and MFA degrees at the University of California at San Diego. I've traveled extensively in Europe, England, Japan and Mexico in search of art and architecture over a long career as a photographer and exhibiting artist, whose work has been collected to museums worldwide. My current work in progress, Le Nôtre and Time, is a large suite of photographs, destined for publication, on the work of 17th century landscape designer, André Le Nôtre. I've taught art history and the history of photography at university level. I am passionate about this subject and would look forward to helping any student acquire a better understanding of the range of subjects art history comprises. I can also help edit art history papers and power point presentations.

Elementary Math

I'm a very successful teacher of elementary math concepts to young children, older children, and adults. I make sure that students understand each of the basic operations, the order of operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, percent problems, prime numbers, exponents, square roots, basic geometry, tables, graphing, and concepts like range, average, and median. I like to use the class textbook for whatever course the student is taking or to work closely with parents in a home schooling situation. I'm also very good at helping students translate word problems into correct math equations. I like to confirm the student's existing math knowledge and build on that in order to help the student become both increasingly strong in math skills and also retain understanding of everything we study together.

English

As a published writer, working editor, experienced teacher, and public speaker, I have a very detailed understanding of expression in the English language arts and am able to help students, from Kindergarten through university, older adults, and anyone learning English as a second language, to improve any aspect of their use of English. Some students might want an editor for a graduate thesis. Others might want help with basic grammar, reading comprehension, preparation for exams, or written work like essays. I truly enjoy assisting anyone who needs help to achieve specific personal, school, or business goals.

ESL/ESOL

I am a very successful tutor for students who are either developing their ongoing mastery of English or who are just beginning to learn English. My students have come from China, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Poland, and I have helped them all to speak English more easily and with better pronunciation, as well as, to compose well-formed and grammatically correct letters, essays, and school work. I listen very closely to my students and help them build on their current knowledge of English. I'm a gentle and effective teacher and am always very happy when my students succeed in acquiring some new ability of expression in English.

Geography

I've been interested in geography since I was a child, when I became interested in maps and what they represent, various mapping techniques, exploration, and travel. When teaching, I present modern geographical concepts: physical geography (including weather systems, tectonic plates, land and rock formation, glacial ages, and the biosphere), human geography (the study of human society and human distribution based on land use), and integrated geography (the study of how physical and human geographies affect each other). I work very closely with the student's own text and can recommend useful and interesting internet resources to aid in visualization of complex and dynamic geographical concepts. I truly enjoy helping students investigate and build working knowledge of our planet.

Geometry

I have taught students geometry with great success for many years. I emphasize reasoning, accurate calculation, the visual thinking necessary for accurate diagrams, and double-checking answers by alternate methods.

I use geometry in many aspects of my daily work as a teacher of mathematics and as a furniture designer.

Grammar

I'm a professional writer and working editor, as well as, a teacher who has a great deal of experience in teaching English, from Kindergarten to university.

Correct grammar is a form of thought that enables the student to make powerful arguments and express clear thoughts that anyone can understand; so, it is a subject very well worth studying.

Also, any clear understanding and practice of grammar in one language will help immensely in the study of a second and third language.

Photography

Photographer, Becky C., who is an Alfred Eisenstaedt Award winner, is best known for the photographs she made for Robert Irwin Getty Garden, published by The J. Paul Getty Museum, which earned her rave reviews in a wide range of publications. Both The Times [London] and The Los Angeles Times Book Review called her photography for Robert Irwin Getty Garden, “exquisite”.

Becky’s photographs have been exhibited internationally and collected to major museums worldwide, including The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; The Los Angeles County Museum; The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; The Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. Her images have, also, been published widely, including in LIFE, The New York Times, and Architectural Record.

Prealgebra

I'm a very successful teacher of prealgebra concepts to young children, older students, and adults. I make sure that students understand the order of operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, percent problems, prime numbers, exponents, square roots, basic geometry, tables, graphing, the calculation of slopes, and basic algebraic concepts. I like to use the class textbook for whatever course the student is taking (or to work closely with parents in a home schooling situation).

I'm also very good at helping students translate word problems into correct math equations. I like to confirm the student's existing math knowledge and build on that in order to help the student become both increasingly strong in math skills and also retain understanding of everything we study together.

Study Skills

As a tutor who guides her students to achieve their goals and to do their best work, I teach a series of important study skills. I'm particularly interested in teaching students to make continuous improvements in organization, time management, test-taking strategies, smart use of references, double-checking sources, good note-taking, completing homework fully and on time, looking up unfamiliar words, speeding up reading while strengthening reading retention, fortifying powers of concentration, and much more, including sound and engaging essay-writing.

Vocabulary

I've loved the study of words since I was a child and was encouraged by my teachers to study Latin and Greek and other languages. This background has allowed me to understand the history, composition, and use of words. I can show students how to make sense of unfamiliar words, memorize them, put them to good use in writing and in reading comprehension.

Writing

Writing is an essential way for a student to express both knowledge and imagination, but clear expression depends on sound sentence structure and logical flow. I can show students how to perfect the elements of grammar, the logical flow required for an essay, and the framework and necessary detail for longer written works.
