I am a modern-day renaissance woman. I ignite passion for lifelong learning and coach students to reach their academic potential.

I was a straight A+ student who excelled at standardized tests, achieving perfect scores on my SAT, ACT and AP tests. I graduated from an Ivy League university and went on to work in various occupations (economist, web designer, copy editor, videographer, photographer, animator).

Growing up bilingual attuned me to the patterns and intricacies of language. As a result, language arts (reading, writing, visual presentation) is one of my strongest skills. I wrote articles for TIME magazine, Forbes and Newsweek. I also judged a national spelling bee and a national debate competition.

My tutoring experience runs the gamut from one-on-one SAT tutoring with at-risk youth to coaching high school debate teams to teaching conversational English to foreign students. My teaching style is dynamically structured according to the student's interests and needs. I try as much as possible to relate lessons back to real-life situations to make them more meaningful.

Though reading, writing and vocabulary are my most requested tutoring subjects, I also possess a vast store of knowledge on humanities and social science subjects.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I worked for 10 years as an interviewer for Brown University's undergraduate admissions office. Through a two-way conversation, I assessed candidates' potential for contributing to the university and helped students learn if the university will match their interests and needs. Working in college admissions made me so keenly aware of the expectations placed on candidates that I can advise applicants how to 1) make realistic and prudent college choices and 2) best present themselves in the application process.

Elementary Math

I earned Straight A's in math from grades K-12. I scored 36 out of 36 on the ACT Math test. I scored 700 out of 800 on the SAT Math test. I have been a member of the National Math Honor Society since 1998. I worked as an economist who analyzed data and built quantitative models.

Photography

I have been working as a freelance photographer and photo editor for 2.5 years. My clients include Coldwell Banker, Blackfire, Athletic Playground and Biometrix. I also teach videography and photography in hands-on, one-on-one sessions with private clients.

Video Production

I am certified by the Bay Area Video Coalition as a video producer. I have been working as a video producer and editor for 2.5 years. I also teach videography and photography in hands-on, one-on-one sessions with private clients and my junior camera operators. My clients include Apple, Google/Chase Bank and Ex'Pression College.

Perfect — Mikka was fantastic in all respects. First, she was immediately responsive to my request for help and responded to my email within a few minutes after I sent my request to her. In fact, her first email was loaded with great ideas. Second, she arrived completely prepared, having reviewed all the course materials related to my son's English assignment, which included an art project. I was so impres ...
