Hello,

I'm Bonnie and I am currently a fourth year English Major at UC Berkeley. I've worked as a personal tutor since my sophomore year of high school in 2008, and have primarily worked with Korean American students. In the past couple of years, alongside personal tutoring I've also been Head Tutor at Cap Prep Academy's after-school program, as well as the Reading Comprehension SAT instructor at Kairos Academy in San Ramon. I currently reside in Berkeley.

In terms of teaching methods or style, I'm flexible and accommodating according to the combined needs of students and parents. I have experience helping students raise their grades, and also targeting specific topics (English, SAT prep, etc.) for high achievers. I am very open to communicating with parents and students about their specific needs, and encourage success through self-belief. I have experience with casual interactions with middle and high school students, having been a leader at my church youth group.

I'd like to grow up to write tons of books and make a lot of people happy. I'd also like to work with students like yourselves, so that when the time comes for you to grow up, you can get the right grades, go to the right school, get the right education, and do whatever you want to do. Because while we may not end up using Geometry proofs or the Newton's second law, or the precise dictionary definition of "somnambulist" in our immediate future, we go to school for the freedom it lends us--the freedom to be happy.

Algebra 1

I have taken math up to AP Calc BC in high school. I also have experience tutoring math at the middle and high school levels, from private tutoring as well as my time at Cal Prep's after school program as a Head Tutor.

American History

I took AP US History in high school, and am able to tutor at the AP level of US History. I also took History 7B at UC Berkeley, which covers United States History after the Civil War. I received an A in the course.

Generally, I am quite knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the humanities, particularly in US History because of my frequent interaction with the subject. I encourage students to look at history as a set of causes and effects, rather than arbitrary dates and numbers.

Biology

I took advanced biology in Berkeley High, and can tutor students in regular to honors biology, with the aid of a textbook. I am quite adept at absorbing concepts quickly, and explaining it to students with a step-by-step process.

Grammar

Grammar is the most technical, yet also one of the most fundamental, aspects of the English language. Considering the number of rules and exceptions there are in English, mastering grammar is no easy feat.

As a Head Tutor at Cal Prep Academy, I served as the Geometry tutor for an entire summer school session. I also took math in high school up to AP Calculus BC.

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading Test gives you 35 minutes to answer 40 questions, and measures reading comprehension. You will be given several passages and questions concerning main idea, tone, etc. You will also be asked to contrast direct meaning with implied meaning. The ACT Test, as compared with the SAT, relies on knowledgeability rather than capacity for logic.

ACT English

The ACT English Test assesses your knowledge of English grammar and writing. You will have 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. Contrary to the SAT sections of English, the ACT tests your level of knowledgeability, rather than capacity for logic.
