After sending a message to Tralee, you will be able to order a new background check for $7.99. As part of your tutor selection process, we encourage you to run updated background checks. Please also review the safety tips for hiring tutors.

If you, or your child, is insecure about math, or is an under-performing student, an artistic or creative one, a learner with math anxiety, a woman who prefers a female role model, an adult returning to school after a hiatus, or a student who misunderstood important math basics, send me an e-mail. Include the topic, course, or grade level being studied, past history with math, plus any information or concerns that will help me get know you. I return my e-mails promptly.

We work at the student's pace and I explain concepts as often as is needed. Students "learn how to learn," not just how to memorize the steps in a problem to turn in the homework. We look at the big picture, then focus on the concepts involved, one by one. If I discover gaps in prior knowledge, we stop before moving on.

My goal is to help students become independent problem-solvers, so that outside the tutoring session, s/he can perform well in school. In fact, one student told me he hears me reminding him to check his work after each step during a test.

After 20+ years as a math educator and counselor, I have learned a lot of math tricks and tips for keeping cool and focused. ALL of my students' grades and skills improve. Most of my dedicated, long-term students earn A's.

I tutor Math 3-4-5-6-7-8, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus, as well as the math portion of the ACT, SAT, GRE, CBEST and home school students. I tutor math for grades 3 through community college pre-calculus.

My rates are low because I work out of my Emeryville condominium. There is an extra charge to come to your home.

The California testing for Algebra 1 is changing this year. MARS tests are being trialed in schools. I am familiar with these tests and the new common core standards.

Algebra 1 consists of symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols. Through

the study of algebra, a student develops an understanding of the symbolic language

of mathematics and the sciences. In addition, algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem-solving situations.

Topics covered include: single and two step equations, word problems, graphing, solving systems and introduction to geometry.

The California testing for Algebra 2 is changing this year. MARS tests are being trialed in schools. I am familiar with these tests as well as the new common core standards.

Topics in Algebra 2 include continuing to work with expressions, equations and inequalities, factoring, quadratic formula, and graphing. New topics include: complex numbers, logarithms, linear quadratic and exponential functions, solving rational equations, analyzing functions, and trigonometry.

You don't have to let the math portion of the CBEST interfere with your plans to enter the field of education. I have helped many adults pass the math portion of the test with only a few weeks of study. My students feel at ease with my gentle and supportive style, yet I don't skip over important concepts needed for the test. I have a bag of tricks to help you remember key concepts as well. It doesn't matter how long ago you took your last math class or your prior grades. We'll set up a study schedule that helps balance work and family with studying.

Geometry uses the tools of properties, theorems and proofs. Topics include congruence, similarity, right triangles, intro to trigonometry, circles, expressing geometry relationships through equations, and making constructions.

6th Grade Math

Sixth-grade math students will:

1. Develop an understanding of the concept of a ratio and use ratio reasoning to solve a variety of problems, including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.

2. Extend their understanding of operations with fractions to include division.

3. Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and their understanding decimals.

4. Find the greatest common factor and least common multiples of certain of operations with whole numbers.

5. Explore negative rational numbers and integers.

6. Draw and label numbers on number lines.

7. Add and subtract negative numbers.

8. Graph pairs of points in a plane.

9. Learn to write expressions and equations with variable

10. Be introduced to area and perimeter and angles.

I teach my students in middle and high school good study skills, such as how to: manage time, create and use organization systems, discover one's unique learning style, how to read for understanding, take notes, use study tools and learn the secrets to taking tests while remaining calm.

As a teacher, I have over 10+ years reaching over 1,500 students. Every student has different needs, personalities and skills.

Trigonometry uses the ratios between triangle lengths. Each ratio has a unique name, sine, cosine, and tangent. Using these tools, you can find missing lengths and angles of other figures.

It also includes the concepts of functions, and different properties (identities) of each functions. This subject is very handy for craftsmen, such as woodworkers, etc.
