Composition (Music)

I have been a Professor of Theory and Composition and have had orchestral works performed by the New Haven Symphony, Los Angeles Jewish Symphony, and elsewhere.

Ear Training

As Professor of Theory and Composition, I ran an aural skills program for four years and greatly improved the students' success rate. I have a Ph.D. in music theory.

General Music

I have taught music theory, composition, aural skills, basic keyboard, and music history at the college level. Therefore I am highly qualified to teach general music (including music literature and music appreciation) according to the student's needs. I am knowledgeable in both classical and popular music.

Guitar

I was a classical guitar major as an undergraduate (prior to switching to music theory) and can teach basic guitar in classical and popular styles.

Music History

I have taught college courses in music history as a stand-alone course and as part of a humanities course. I have published musicological research on historical subjects, and know the style periods and composers of classical music in great depth.

Piano

I began piano as a child. As a theory major at The Mannes College of Music, I was required to take piano. Although not technically as advanced as piano majors, I still played some difficult pieces, and at one point I was told by a faculty member that she liked my playing more because I understood the music. I am very good as a performance coach for helping others interpret music with excellence and expression. I was once hired to teach a blind intermediate piano student, and had to invent musical accompaniments to hymns and popular songs, then play each hand for her. I would tell her which notes to play and which fingerings to use. It worked well.

Sight Singing

Sight singing, the art of reading music by sight, is actually best learned by studying solfeggio, and learning how to sing using prepared homework exercises. As one learns to sing increasingly difficult exercises, one's ability to sing music at sight increases. I have run an aural skills program using strict conservatory method which is extremely effective--the most effective way to grow one's musical ear and learn to sing notated music.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
