I have been tutoring math for more than 14 years and taught high school math before moving into the engineering field. My tutoring experience ranges from elementary school through college as well as test preparation such as SAT, ACT, and GRE. Subjects taught in Colorado public schools include Algebra 1/2, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus (including honors and IB classes). I am available most weekdays after 4pm and almost anytime on the weekends to meet with students at the El Dorado Hills Library or nearby Starbucks.
When working with algebra students, I take the time to listen to how a student intuitively would like to solve a problem. I prefer to build on the student's natural inclinations than force them to learn it "my way." Some of the tricks and techniques I use now to teach students originally came from other students. With algebra 1 introducing the fundamentals needed to succeed in all other math areas, I like to spend extra time reinforcing good note taking, study techniques, and test taking skills.
When working with geometry students I find it beneficial to spend a little extra time looking at why axioms and theorems are true, rather than just using them. Instead of 2 column proofs, I find that students understand proofs of these concepts from drawings and practical examples. Of course, we can work on 2 column proofs if they are required or recommended by the classroom teacher.
When helping prepare students for taking the SAT, I like to spend time discussing test taking strategies in addition to brushing up on math skills. I usually have students complete practice exams first to determine which topics need different explanations or more practice. In the past, I have found that a couple tutor sessions per week for a few weeks before the test is enough preparation for students currently enrolled in any math class. If the student is taking a small break from math classes, I recommend more help.
When helping students in trigonometry, I prefer to focus on how to derive the various identities rather than memorize. This helps take away some of the test anxiety and fear of forgetting.
Excellent tutor! — After spending six weeks in school trying to learn, Sharon taught my student more in just an hour. We will probably use Sharon for the rest of high school! Excellent tutor--easy to follow--explains in a very understandable way and is great with correspondence and emails! AAAAA! ...
