My name is Sohail. I have worked my way through school by first tutoring college students in all areas of math
in a tutoring center environment and later on as a mathematics
faculty in community college. I always get compliments on how good and effective my communication skills are and maybe that's because I always try to see the subjects I'm tutoring through my student's eyes, not my own. Currently I'm also a graduate student, working on my M.S. in statistics
and being a student definitely helps to understand the struggles and challenges that other students face. I hope I can have the opportunity to simplify your challenges utilizing my teaching skills.
One of the techniques I utilize at the beginning of my first session with a new student is the knowledge assessment. I have had student in all ages and knowledge backgrounds so at first I start by asking a few simple, straight forward questions to find out about my student's knowledge and proficiency level of the material. I also like to see my student’s syllabus, text book, lecture note and I gear my instructions based on these. This way I make sure that my instructions compliments my student's prior knowledge and is in accordance with the curriculum designed for my student by his/her school.
The other rather simple but highly effective style that I follow is to highlight the related formulas and their corresponding values and also to mark the related terms and variables within the body of a problem with different color pencils so my students can see the mathematical relationship between the variables and their corresponding substitute values within the body of the problem with one glance.
These are some of the techniques that I have realized to be highly effective with my students throughout the years. Thank you for reading
and I hope I can have the opportunity to simplify your challenges utilizing my teaching skills.
