My name is Joslyn and I absolutely love working with children! I graduated Cum Lade from San Diego State University with my Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies. I also finished my teaching certification program at SDSU.

I am currently a day-to-day substitute teacher working with students in grades K-5. I have about ten years experience working with students. My experience includes: supervising a homework center, working as a personal tutor, working as a student helper at a local elementary school, not to mention over 120 hours of field experience at various schools throughout the county.

As a teacher, the most effective teaching method that I love to implement in the classroom is the Gradual Release of Responsibility Method. This type of instruction allows for me to start off by demonstrating the specific task students are to perform (modeling). Then the students and I will work on a similar problem together (guided instruction). Finally, the students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned (independent practice). This is an effective method because the process changes from being "all teacher doing" to "all student doing." Students will be expected to apply what they have learned.

I have a passion for learning as well as teaching. I look forward to working with dedicated students and their families.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold a SB 2042 Multiple Subject Credential with a specialization in science. I am a day-to-day substitute working for San Diego Unified School District. I have also completed more than 120 hours working with students at local elementary schools.

Phonics

As part of my certification, I had to take courses in language acquisition. I have administered multiple phonemic/phonological awareness tests such as: Yopp-Singer and Dolch High Frequency words. I have also worked with Kindergartners and first graders with sounding out words, chucking words, and putting sounds and letters together.

Study Skills

I was a AVID student, and a former AVID employee. AVID is a college preparation program that helps students with various skills, including good study habits. One skill that I learned and continue to implement with the majority of my students is Cornell note-taking. Students are to organize their notes with headers and a higher level thought question. I also practice organization skills with students as a way to develop great study habits.
