Welcome! It's time to get lost in the wonderful of Biology. Many of my former students have told me that they are terrified by the word, "Biology." Why, exactly? Many of them have told me that there are just too many words to remember. My job is to break down terminology and show you that it's not scary at all. Take the word "Biology" for example. "Bio" comes from the Greek word for life. -Ology means study of. See how easy it can be. I also have many tricks to help you remember the material. Take the mitochondria of a cell. I refer to it as the "mighty" mitochondria because if you are mighty you will need a lot of energy. So now anytime you hear the word mitochondria you'll think mighty=energy. To elaborate and take it a step further the main function would be energy production. See how easy it can be. One thing I have taught students is that if you know the structure you will know the function. This is the most basic concept in Biology. Surely you want to know a little about me. I am second year nursing student from Citrus College. On my path to nursing I have successfully completed Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology all with a 4.0 GPA and awarded the Biology Department Award. While at Citrus College I work with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Center and my official title is a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader. I also enjoy English and have completed Introduction to College English and Critical Thinking with a 4.0 GPA. As an SI leader I am assigned to a Biology class that may vary in size, usually from 45-60 students. I sit in the class and take notes just like any other student would, but the main difference is that I am responsible for creating lesson plans and working with the professor to focus on difficult concepts once we get back to the STEM center. Once at the STEM center we outline our work on white boards or scratch paper, groups or individually, using auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning. This is the same approach I take as tutor. I also apply it to real life scenarios or sometimes cartoons depending on the situation. I would like the opportunity to share my passion of Biology with you and make your life a bit easier.
