The way I usually work as a writing tutor or as an editor is to sit with you in front of my computer and read your writing aloud to you. In that way, you are available to respond immediately to all my questions and suggestions, and we can change things on the spot.
Today, if you are not nearby, we can approximate that collaborative intimacy with free audio and video programs (such as Skype) to see and hear each other, and with free teleconferencing programs for screen sharing (such as Teamviewer). Thus, although I am in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can virtually sit right next to me from hundreds or even thousands of miles away as we discuss your writing and revise it together in real time.
I have taught a professional editing course at the University of California, Berkeley, and have edited more than 70 books for academic and commercial publishers, including University of California Press, Stanford University Press, Oxford University Press, Cornell University Press, Sierra Club Books, HarperCollins Publishers, Warner Books, Lawrence Hall of Science, Institute of East Asian Studies, University of California Art Museum, and others.
I also help individuals with nonfiction books, novels, short stories, children’s stories, screenplays, speeches, poetry collections, doctoral dissertations, master’s theses, articles, papers, proposals, brochures, and tutorial instruction in all the above.
On the creative side, I have worked as a writer and editor for film studios in Hollywood and Europe, and was a co-writer of "Great," which won the Academy Award for best short animated film. Recent successes by clients include a published memoir that a Hollywood producer is currently considering for a feature film or TV miniseries; a stage play that will be opening off-Broadway in New York and then traveling to Los Angeles; an historical novel and potential screenplay that chronicles the last hours of Henry Ford; and the confessions of Willie Nelson’s drug dealer.
On the academic side, I have edited manuscripts for professors and students at more than 30 colleges and universities, including Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Los Angeles, University of California, San Francisco, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, and Yale University.
In addition to editorial and writing assistance, I can provide desktop publishing services, guide you through every step of self-publishing, or refer you to an appropriate publisher, producer, or literary agent.
