American College Testing (ACT) is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admission. ACT consists of five tests: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science reasoning, and an optional Writing test. ACT assessment measures a student’s general educational development and their capability to complete college-level work using multiple choice tests covering four skill areas: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. The optional Writing test measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. ACT results provide an indicator of “college readiness” and scores in each of the subtests correspond to skills in entry-level college courses in English, Algebra, Social Science, Humanities, and Biology.

ACT English is a forty-five minute test covering usage / mechanics (issues such as commas, apostrophes, misplaced / dangling modifiers, colons, fragments, and run-ons), and rhetorical skills (style: clarity and brevity, strategy, transitions, and organization: sentences in a paragraph and paragraphs in a passage). I tutor students on the skill and content areas of ACT English so that they can improve their test performance and scores.

ACT Science reasoning is a thirty-five minute test which measures interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem solving. There are seven passages: three data representation passages, three research summary passages, and one conflicting viewpoint passage. I tutor students on the skill and content areas of ACT Science so that they can improve their test performance and scores.

Algebra 1 is the study of variables, equations, graphs, property of real numbers, writing and solving linear equations and functions, exponents and exponential functions, quadratic equations, polynomials, and connections to geometry. I tutored all of the concepts and their applications for the above topics to middle, high school and college students.

Anatomy deals with the structure and organization of living things. Major branches of anatomy include comparative anatomy (study of similarity and differences in organisms) and human anatomy (study of organs and organ systems of the human body). I tutored college students in the concepts and concept applications for various areas of anatomy.

ASVAB is a multiple choice test which incorporates eight areas. Each section is scored separately, then scores are combined to obtain a composite score. Scoring is on a percentile basis, and the highest possible score is 99. Different branches of the military will have different minimum composite scores. The test is timed and it takes approx. three and one half hours to complete.

The sections of the test are as follows: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto and Shop Information, and Mechanical Comprehension

Biology is the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. I have tutored the concepts and their applications for the previously described topics to high school and college students.

Calculus is the study of limits, functions, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. The main branches of calculus are differential calculus and integral calculus. Integral calculus finds a quantity when the rate of change is known. Differential calculus determines the rate of change of a quantity. I tutored all of the above concepts and their applications to college students.

California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) is a four hour test required by the State of California for all prospective teachers. It is not designed to test how well a person is teaching. CBEST was designed and implemented to ensure that a prospective classroom teacher has basic knowledge in certain subject areas. CBEST Math has questions that require you to solve mathematical problems, and test estimation of measurement, statistical principles, computation and problem solving, numerical and graphical relationships.

I tutored students in the following subjects in order to improve understanding, use of information, content skills, and performance. The topics taught in the following subjects contain the information which is on the CBEST Math test.

(1) Elementary math (Some of the topics are addition, subtraction, multiplication, use of whole numbers, negative numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages; counting, fractions, ratios, word problems, and rounding rules)

(2) Prealgebra (Topics which were taught include study of numbers, ratios, proportions, percentiles, factors, and fractions). (4) Chemistry (Some topics include: the use of standard units of length, temperature, weight and capacity in the US measurement system; identification and use of formulas)

CBEST Reading assesses your ability to comprehend information presented in written passages, tables, and graphs. The Reading section questions tests two skill factors: (1) critical analysis and evaluation, and (2) comprehension and research skills.

I tutored students in reading. Some of the topics / skills include how to recognize words quickly and effortlessly; learn to analyze and obtain a level of understanding (comprehension); recognition of the main idea or purpose in a text; identify summaries of ideas, facts, and details; meaning of words, sentences and paragraphs. I utilized the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) method in order to improve a student’s understanding of the information in a text.

CBEST Writing section has two essay topics. This section includes two writing topics that assess your ability to write effectively. One of the essay questions asks you to write about a remembered experience. The other question is designed to elicit prose that will permit writers to demonstrate their analytical skills.

I tutored students in composition where I taught how to place words and sentences together in conventional patterns. In addition, students were given information on how to create / develop effective paragraphs (selecting a good topic, build sentences with clarity, good details, connecting details with clarity, and complete development of ideas) and essays (Organize paragraphs into various kinds of essays whose content compare, analyze, classify and explain. Create information in a persuasive manner which will keep the reader’s interest)

Chemistry is the science of atomic matter, its chemical reactions, composition, structure properties, and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems. I tutored all of the above concepts and their applications to high school and college students.

Ecology is the scientific study of relationships between living organisms and their environment. Ecologists study the composition, distribution, amount, number, and changing states of organisms within and among ecosystems. I have tutored students in the various topics of ecology.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a three hour forty five minute, multiple choice, and multi stage test required by most graduate schools. There are six sections to the test. The first section contains two essays. The next five sections cover verbal ability (reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence) and quantitative ability (problem solving, quantitative comparison, and numeric entry).

GRE verbal part of the exam tests vocabulary primarily in context, and with extensive reading comprehension. GRE math (quantitative) tests basic math concepts up to Geometry 1. Most commonly tested topics include basic algebra, geometry, averages, ratios, number properties, exponent and sequence roots, and numeric problem solving. There are also two essays. One will give you the argument and you will have to evaluate it. The other tests your ability to formulate convincing argument based upon a topic selected from two choices.

Every skill and content area tested on the GRE can be learned and mastered. With time, practice, and the right coaching you can master the GRE. I tutored students on the skill and content areas on the GRE so that they can improve their test performance and scores.

I tutored / taught students in general microbiology with an emphasis on bacteriology, epidemiology, water and food microbiology. Course content included topics on food and water contamination; microorganisms which are required for the production of food (e.g. beer, wine, bread, cheese, and yogurt); identification, characterization, and classification of bacterial species; uses of stains and dyes; distribution and patterns of health events. Instruction was in a freshman classroom setting and individual tutoring. I have a BSc in Chemistry with an emphasis in Biochemistry and minors in Biology and Mathematics.

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms which are defined as any living organisms that is either a single cell (unicellular), a cell cluster, or has no cells at all (acellular). The branches of microbiology can be classified into pure and applied sciences (e.g. epidemiology / medical, industrial, microbial, food, agricultural, environmental, and water microbiology). Microbiology also can be classified based on taxonomy, such as bacteriology (study of bacteria), mycology (study of fungi), protozoology (study of protozoa), phycology (study of algae), parasitology (study of parasites), immunology (study of immune system), virology (study of viruses), and nematology (study of nematodes.

Microbiological procedures usually must be aseptic, and a variety of tools (such as light microscope) are used in combination with stains and dyes. Most commonly used stains are called basic dyes. Two types of basic dyes are simple stains and differential stains. Simple stains consist of one dye and are used to identify the shape and cell arrangement of bacteria. Examples of simple stains are methylene blue, safranin, and crystal violet. Differential stains use two or more dyes and help to distinguish between two or more organisms, or two or different parts of the organism. Types of differential stains are gram, acid fast, negative and flagella.

Microsoft Excel is spreadsheet software whose parts create a powerful tool for presenting financial information. Program parts make gathering and presenting of information easier, and allow for advanced spreadsheet functions. Excel includes worksheet, formulas and data analysis.

Formulas available in Excel can be used for dates and times, accounting, statistics, and financials. Complex formulas can be quickly calculated using this software. Other operations available in Excel are chart creation from data in the spreadsheet, formatting of cells for number formats, conditional formatting according to calculation results and print formatting. There is also a developer section in excel which allows the user to create macros. Microsoft Outlook is a personal information manager which is often used as an email application. However, it also includes a calendar, task manager, contact manager, note taking, a journal, and web browsing. It can be used as a stand-alone application or can work in conjunction with Microsoft Exchange or SharePoint servers. This will allow use by multiple individuals in an organization, so that they can share mailboxes, calendars, exchange public folders, SharePoint lists and meeting schedules. Add on applications are available which can integrate Outlook with Blackberry, mobile phones, and Skype internet communications.

Some features of Microsoft Outlook are the ability to (1) send your calendar information with calendar snapshots, which creates an HTML, (2) publish calendars in Internet Calendar format to Microsoft Office Online or to a WebDAV server, (3) send text and picture messages from Outlook with Outlook Mobile Service to a mobile phone, (4) forward Outlook email messages, contacts, appointments, and tasks as text messages, (5) add a picture or company logo to a contact or electronic business card, (6) and improved anti-phishing filters.

Word is software for word processing in the Microsoft Office suite. Word allows you to create various types of documents such as letters, papers, flyers, faxes, and more. It also allows you to easily create professional looking documents using various options such as modifying page layout, working with columns, hyperlinks and shapes, styles and themes, visual designs, formatting tools, headers and footers, tables, SmartArt graphics, mail merge, shapes, text boxes, WordArt, checking spelling and grammar, inserting clip art and pictures, and sharing features. Word 2010 is somewhat different from the previous versions. The toolbars are similar to Word 2007 because they include the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar. However, commands such as Print and Open are now in the Backstage View instead of on the Microsoft Office Button.

Organic chemistry is a sub discipline within chemistry which involves the scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reaction, and preparation of carbon based compounds, hydrocarbons, and their derivatives. These compounds may contain any number of other elements, including hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, the halogens, phosphorous, silicon, and sulfur. Organic compounds form the basis of many products such as plastics, drugs, petrochemicals, food, explosives, and paints. They also form the basis of many life processes. Organic chemistry is a highly creative science and organic chemists can create new molecules which if carefully designed may have important properties for the betterment of human life.

The fundamentals of organic chemistry include topics such as nomenclature of organic compounds, stereo-chemistry, reaction mechanisms, structure and function of organic functional groups, introduction to carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and proteins, nucleic acids, and basic aspects of polymer chemistry. During the study of organic chemistry students will use instrumental analysis and chemical reactions to become familiar with the nomenclature and behavior of organic functional groups. Students will also utilize a variety of instruments such as infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry to determine the success of their reactions. Traditional techniques such as thin layer chromatography, column chromatography, extraction and fractional distillation will be used.

Precalculus (or Algebra 3) is an advanced form of secondary school algebra and is a foundation mathematical discipline. Precalculus prepares students for calculus and explores topics which will be applied in calculus. The topics that are studied in precalculus are real and complex numbers; solving inequalities and equations; composite, polynomial, and rational functions; properties of functions; exponential and logarithmic functions; trigonometry and trigonometric identities; trigonometric functions and their inverse; conic sections; binomial theorem; vectors, matrices, and limits. I tutored high school and college students in the concepts and concept use for various topics of precalculus.

Proofreading is reading to detect and correct production errors in the text. Typically a proofreader looks at increments of text for grammatical or typographical errors, content and sentence structure; or compare written text to typeset copy, and then mark any errors using standard proofreading marks.

I proofread class compositions, masters’ theses, simple and complex projects on the job which were submitted to management.

Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive comprehension. It is a means of communication, language acquisition, and also sharing of information and ideas. It is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, and attitude. Readers use a variety of reading strategies to assist with the translation of symbols into sounds or visual representation and comprehension.

Reading is usually an individual activity, although on occasion a person will read out loud for the benefit of other listeners. Most reading is either of the printed word from ink or toner on paper, such as a book, magazine, newspaper or notebook; or of electronic displays such as computer displays, television, mobile phones, or e-readers.

Reading is an intensive process in which the eye quickly moves to assimilate text. Reading skill (literacy) is the ability to use the symbols of a writing system. This ability is used so you are able to interpret the information symbols represent, and then re-create those same symbols so that others can derive the same meaning. Sub-lexical reading (teaching reading by associating characters or groups of characters with sounds, or by using phonics) and Lexical reading (acquiring words or phrases without attention to the characters or groups of characters that compose them or by using whole language learning) are processes which contribute to how we learn to read.

There are several methods of reading and some of them are:

a. Subvocalized reading – combines sight reading with internal sounding of the words.

b. Speed reading – a collection of methods for increasing reading speed without reduction in comprehension or retention.

c. Proofreading – reading for the purpose of detecting typographical errors. One can also learn to do this rapidly.

d. Rereading – reading a book more than once.

e. Structure-Proposition-Evaluation (SPE) method – Writing is read in three passes: (1) for the structure of the work; (2) for the logical propositions made, organized into chains of inference; and (3) for evaluation of the merits of the arguments and conclusions. This method involves the suspension of judgment of the work or its arguments until they are fully understood.

f. Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review (SQ3R) method – reading toward being able to teach what is read. This method is often used in public schools.

There are also various reading rates. These include reading for memorization, reading for learning, reading for comprehension, and skimming. Reading for comprehension is mostly used in the daily reading of most people.

SAT Math test incorporates problem solving (multiple choice questions) and grid ins (student produced questions). Every skill and content area tested on the SAT Math can be learned and mastered. With time, practice, and the right coaching you can master the SAT Math. I tutored students on the skill and content areas on the SAT Math so that they can improve their test performance and scores.

SAT Critical Reading tests a student’s ability to read and understand written English at the level needed to make the most of a university course. SAT Reading has two types of questions, sentence completion and reading comprehension. Sentence completion questions contain one or two blanks, and you have to find the best answer choice to make the sentence make complete sense. Reading comprehension questions your understanding of the content and style of specific reading passages. These comprehension questions are the most demanding. A student’s readings throughout high school will be very helpful in preparing for the reading comprehension questions. I tutored students in SAT Reading so that they can improve their test performance and scores.

Study skills are the skills required to be an independent learner, build confidence, develop efficiency, improve performance so that students are prepared for test taking, and enable students to be proactive, make good decisions, and think critically.

A comprehensive study skills curriculum offers helpful strategies covering topics such as goal setting, organization (organizing course materials / balancing home and school), note taking skills, study techniques, test taking skills, memory, listening, writing, time management (preparing a term calendar and update as the term goes on / preparing a weekly schedule and update as the week goes on / each evening before a school day prepare a daily organizer for the next day), and SQ3R (reading comprehension method – survey / question / read / recite / review). This curriculum would be modified depending on a student’s skill needs.

TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a multiple choice exam that measures entry level skills and abilities of nursing program applicants by testing basic knowledge in Science, Mathematics, Reading, and English. TEAS exam academic content areas are as follows: Mathematics–51 mins. to answer 34 questions; Science–66 mins. to answer 54 questions; Reading-58 mins. to answer 48 questions; English and Language Usage-34 mins. to answer 34 questions. This is a total of 209 minutes to answer 170 questions. Only 150 questions are scored. The additional 20 questions are used as testing for future versions of the test. These questions are not identified apart from the 150 questions which are scored. Therefore the scored questions are: Mathematics (30 questions), Science (48 questions), Reading (42 questions), and English and Language (30 questions).
