I have a BSc in Chemistry with an emphasis in Biochemistry and minors in Biology and Mathematics. I also have an MS in Environmental Health and an MS in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in environmental studies. I have tutored extensively at the middle, high school, and community college levels for basic skills, composition, mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and arithmetic), chemistry, physics, and biology. I taught freshman chemistry at the college level.
My philosophical approach to teaching acknowledges that students are significant contributors to their learning. They have experiences both inside and outside of the classroom, which they bring to the learning process. This information is part of the student / teacher dialogue, which forms the instructional process. My intent is to have a supportive learning environment in which the students become active agents in their learning. Instruction is varied to fit each student's learning styles and thus ensure their engagement in a collaborative learning process.
I strive to see students individually, in terms of their potential, as well as their unlimited possibilities. I get to know the students, observe their patterns and beliefs about themselves and their abilities. I recognize the importance of helping students sustain a successful vision of themselves as learners, and holding that vision for them when they are faced with challenges. I endeavor to create a learning environment that meets the varied needs of students.
