Well, hello! I'm Lauren Mae.
I've always had a passion for words. Any and all of them. From Clifford to Shakespeare, from the smallest prepositions to the largest compounds, I love them all.
When I was in college (at Fresno Pacific University - Go Sunbirds!), my favorite job was tutoring students in writing across the curriculum. I learned there to make tutoring a collaborative experience; it's not about me telling the tutee everything or just blindly fixing things or making their work more like mine. It's about having a dialogue that edifies both parties and results in a better paper, a better understanding of English language conventions, and ultimately, a better learner. I tutored writing in English, history, biblical studies, communication, philosophy, and kinesiology during my year and a half at the university writing center.
I also wrote grants for a literacy nonprofit organization for a year after I graduated college (with my BA in English, as I'm sure doesn't surprise you), so I've got some proficiency in technical writing and contracts. I realize you don't do a lot of that in school, but maybe you're taking a business class or studying politics. I'd be happy to help with that, too.
I've spent the last two and a half years working in higher education admissions with students that want to become teachers. This has been my least fundamentally academic professional experience, but I've always been within arms distance of teachers during this time. I've been keeping my love of words maintained; I'm an avid reader and writer, and am constantly hungry to learn more.
I've loved tutoring in the past because it's allowed me to put together the things I care for the most in this world: words, and people. I've worked with middle schoolers, freshmen in college, adult learners returning to school, graduate students, international students, ESL students, at-risk high schoolers. Each group has helped me grow. And I like to think, that in some small way, through that one paper or one essay or one long conversation about the proper usage of semicolons, I've helped them, too.
Feel free to get in touch with me if you want to know more. I live in the South Valley and would love to meet you, your family, your child, or whoever it is that's brought you to my little corner.
