My name is Morgan W., and I have a strong affinity for mathematics. Math has always been my favorite and strongest subject. I smile and get excited when I learn or talk about math, especially when I discover tricks and shortcuts.
I have nearly three total years of experience in tutoring math subjects. Most of that time was spent with same- and lower-grade students at my high school about algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus. One year I helped my school receptionist, who was in community college, with her algebra 1 assignments. All students had a better understanding of the math concepts that I helped them with.
In the summer of 2011 I have interned at the Engineering and Transportation Department at the City of San Leandro, CA, under a student internship program run by the Bay Area's Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), based in Oakland, CA. In the paid internship, I had drawn parking lot layouts for the Senior Transportation Engineer, as well as conducted multiple traffic surveys -- parking, spot-speed, origin-destination, and lane width -- throughout the internship.
Currently I am a second-year civil engineering student at the University of California, Davis. My most recently completed math course there was MAT 22A, the class about linear algebra.
Though math had always been a friendly subject for me, the first time I was ever blindsided by it was when I took MAT 21A (derivatives) my first quarter in college. I did not have calculus before then, so I struggled considerably. I came out of the course with a not-so-good grade. That class actually made me question whether math was my favorite subject anymore.
But the next quarter, when I took 21A again, with determination to comprehend calculus and pass the class, my understanding of derivatives and other concepts taught the first quarter had dramatically improved. Given newly attained exposure, the concepts made a lot more sense. I went from failing calculus one quarter to subject mastery the next. That reassured, reinforced, and reconfirmed the fact that I love math.
When I see that someone is in need of help with math and does not want to struggle with it, I am always willing to step up and offer my assistance.
I am competent tutoring any subject in math, up to and including calculus. Soon, I will also offer tutoring in piano.
I loved when I was learning the first level of algebra. I just liked the motion, relocation, and manipulation of numbers and variables. I also had a fun time tutoring it. I can see how the manipulation work and processes can get over one's head; it can seem like a lot to keep track of. But trust me: algebra 1 is not as hard as it looks.
To me, Algebra is a case of number movement and working with variables. There are no complicated processes involved. I have found Algebra quite fun when I learned it and have tutored it to schoolmates in high school.
From first-hand experience, I know how quirky and tricky calculus can be. As with any math, I look for the fastest, most understandable ways of solving calculus problems. It's all about looking for those tricks and discovering reliable byways associated with calculus concepts.
I have passed the proficiency exam, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve, however I would like to further my understanding of the subject. And I think that's best accomplished by talking about it with other people.
Elementary math consists of the simple, basic building blocks needed to tackle any math later on. I am willing to work with students to get started with mathematics. One's mathematical foundation should always be as strong as possible.
Algebra to me is a case of number movement and working with variables. Prealgebra is a starting stage -- an opportunity to get a feel for what actual algebra is and to prepare to do some work. Prealgebra was quite interesting when I learned it.
