I am a graduate from UC Santa Cruz, and I majored in General Biology. I have worked in the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity as the President, Vice-President, and Risk Management Officer. I currently am an intern at UC Davis's Plant Pathology Department, and I tutor when I'm not in lab. I have used the skills I have learned from collegiate years and applied it to my tutoring. My teaching is goal oriented and focuses on character of the individual student; finding what interests the student and show how it can be used in their daily life helps give meaning and understanding to their education. I have worked for !ACE tutoring service prior to Wyzant, and I have worked mainly with students struggling with Math and English. My students scores at the end of the tutoring session improved greatly (most easily doubling their previous scores). I am patient, thorough, and I give quality 1-on-1 tutoring sessions.

Matthew’s subjects

Adobe Photoshop

I have photoshopped since I was in high school. It can be very handy to fix up a photo from color correction to removing blemishes. I have made my own text effects images to photo touch ups.

Algebra 1

I excelled in math in high school, never getting below a B+. I can teach this subject with ease and help find what helps the student understand the material. My father often related it to things I was doing in my high school, so that the math made more sense. Its helped me immensely, and I think it would also help my students.

Algebra 2

I excelled in math in high school, never getting below a B+. I can teach this subject with ease and help find what helps the student understand the material. My father often related it to things I was doing in my high school, so that the math made more sense. Its helped me immensely, and I think it would also help my students.

Biology

I took high school biology and I found it very interesting. Due to my experience with biology during high school, I pursued a major in the biological sciences. I currently have a bachelor's in general biology from UC Santa Cruz.

Chemistry

As an undergrad at UC Santa Cruz, the Biology Department required that all Biology/Health Sciences related majors are required to take 3 quarters of general chemistry as a prerequisite before taking upper division courses. I performed well in these courses, gaining a solid understanding of chemistry as well as the relationships that are shared amongst the elements. I got A's and B+'s in these courses.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a graduate from UC Santa Cruz, and I majored in General Biology. I've worked with Elementary students in both English and Math skills for !ACE Tutoring services in the past.

I have been given students who do not confidently speak, read, or write in English. I first determine how much they know by giving them a standardized test to see how much the student knows, and develop a plan for that student to help them achieve a better understanding and knowledge of the English language. For example, when I worked for !ACE Tutoring Services, I was assigned a 1st Grade Spanish speaker, who knew little English. After taking a standardized test, she received a score below 20%. After working with her for 8 weeks, I helped her learn words by using multiple exercises from reading easy-to-read children books to identifying words with the appropriate image. Playing memorization games also encouraged my student to learn more. After the 8 week period was over, she retook the standardized test and got a 75%, a substantially higher grade than when she previously had taken the test.

For my math Students:
In math, much like for my English students, a standardized test was done to see how well the student knew the material. After determining what the student was struggling with, a plan was made specifically for the student for them to learn the material and after gaining a strong understanding of the basics the was student introduced to more difficult problems.
For example, I tutored a young 3rd-grade student who struggled with subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division. When she took the standardized test in the beginning of our tutoring sessions, she scored a 37%. After determining where she needed to focus, she got more confident, and was able to handle harder problems with ease. She did not do well with audio or textual instruction, but visuals and hands-on exercises allowed her to grasp the mathematical concepts. At the end of our tutoring sessions, when she retook the standardized test, she scored an 80%, and stronger grade than her previous score and her parents could not have been more proud.

English

I really enjoyed English classes during my collegiate career. The classes I took often challenged me, and thus enhanced my writing and grammar skills. Knowing how to properly use the English language can make a difference in how you think, speak, and write. In high school, I received A's and B's and in college I received A's. I often helped my roommates with their grammar and their papers.

General Computer

I've worked with computers for numerous projects and assignments since I was in the 5th grade. I help my mother, who usually has inquiries with specific functions of programs to internet browsers. I have plenty of experience with general computer programs ranging from Microsoft Word to Adobe Photoshop.

Geometry

I excelled in math in high school, never getting below a B+. I can teach this subject with ease and help find what helps the student understand the material. My father often related it to things I was doing in my high school, so that the math made more sense. Its helped me immensely, and I think it would also help my students.

Microsoft Excel

I've created multiple spreadsheets to help understand the change of species in an area to creating a budget for a fraternity. This program was essential in my undergraduate years and I am very proficient with Excel.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I attended Leonardo da Vinci High School, a school that requires you to master the art of presenting by the time you graduate. We were taught the do's and the don'ts of powerpoint presentations and were graded highly on our presentations. I often help my mother, who is a lecturer at California State University of Sacramento, who relies on this program for her lectures. Since high school, I have used them in my college courses, and have received excellent grades because of them.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is by far the one of the most common and most used programs on PCs or Macs. I am very familiar with this program. If you are writing papers, books, reports, I can help you!

Prealgebra

I am quite proficient at mathematics. I have taken 4 college math courses from precalculus to multivariable calculus. Anything below this mathematics I am comfortable teaching. In high school, I never got lower than a B+ in a math class.

Precalculus

I excelled in math in high school, never getting below a B+. I can teach this subject with ease and help find what helps the student understand the material. My father often related it to things I was doing in my high school, so that the math made more sense. Its helped me immensely, and I think it would also help my students.

SAT Math

I excelled in math in high school, never getting below a B+. I can teach this subject with ease and help find what helps the student understand the material. My father often related it to things I was doing in my high school, so that the math made more sense. Its helped me immensely, and I think it would also help my students.

Statistics

I took AP Statistics back when I was in high school and got a B+ in the class. Of all the mathematics I took during my high school years, it was probably the most difficult to grasp, simply due to the wide range of conditions and assumptions made in statistics. Once I treated the subject more like a science than a standard math course, I truly enjoyed it. It can be difficult to teach (as some concepts are abstract and often not written in layman's terms), but with repetition, practice, and proper guidance, statistics is much more manageable.

My statistics experience was problem-based learning, where we were given multiple questions using the statistics we learned in class. For example, we used linear regression lines to determine the depreciation of buying used cars vs. classic cars to comparing costs of common cereals and determining standard deviations among their prices to their competitors. Needless to say, statistics is best learned through hands on experiences, which is a strong part of my tutoring.

Education

University of California, Santa Cruz (Biology)

Great tutoring experience; good communicator Matt was on time. After introducing himself he immediately inquired as to what I am attempting to learn. Not a minute was wasted and yet I didn't feel rushed. He has some concern about the program I am attempting, which I appreciate, and gave him my permission to investigate. I am happy that Matt has some additional time to see me this week. 2nd session: Matt had reviewed the programs I was at ...
