I have an M.A. from UC Berkeley in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, and a B.A. from Pomona College (Claremont, CA) in Ancient Greek and Latin. I also have Post-Baccalaureate certificate from UC Davis in Ancient Greek and Latin, and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate from the University of Cambridge at the British Council in Izmir.
For six years I worked as an archaeological tour guide in Turkey and Greece, where I lectured and gave tours of archaeological sites and museums. I have worked on several excavations in Turkey, including one Bronze Age underwater excavation. When I was not working in archaeology during the nine years I lived in Turkey, I made a living as a TEFL certified English tutor.
After I returned to the US, I continued my studies in ancient languages and archaeology. As a graduate student at UC Berkeley, I taught discussion and paper-writing sections for a Greek Mythology class. In the Spring of 2012, I taught a semester of "Introductory Latin" and "Classical Mythology" at the University of the Pacific. I subsequently taught "Roman Art & Architecture" at UC Davis during Summer Session II 2012. In 2013, I will be teaching "Classical Mythology" and "Roman Art & Architecture" at UC Davis once again, this time during Summer Session I.
In the past, I worked as a graduate advisor for Turkish scholarship students in UC Davis Extension International Programs. It was my task to help students apply to graduate schools and learn to write application essays in English. For the 20 students I mentored, we had a 100 percent success rate for graduate school admissions.
I speak, read, and write fluent Turkish. I am an advanced student of ancient Greek and Latin. I can read French comfortably, and I am currently studying German. My experience learning various languages has also been very useful in helping both native and foreign speakers of English learn how to write essays and understand grammar.
My strongest areas of tutoring expertise are in Latin, Ancient Greek, Turkish, ESL, essay writing, research/presentation skills, and undergraduate/graduate application preparation. I love to teach and help others learn, and I believe age should never be considered a factor when learning something new. I'd love to help you or your child learn something new.
