I have been working as a tutor since 2008, usually in a university setting. I am highly proficient with regards to essays, particularly thesis building and structural formatting. Grammar, syntax, and reading are also an area of my particular interest.
In the past, I've taught remedial writing courses, and I have tutored in a wide range of subjects, including psychology, philosophy, English, reading, writing, US History, ESL, business, and on a few notable occasions, electrical engineering. (I don't recommend that you ask me to tutor you in electrical engineering. We'll both spend the entire time in a state of discomfort and mild irritation.)
I've been working with ESL students for four years, which includes domestic and international teaching (I taught English in Kenya and Turkey), with a broad range of students (eight year olds, middle and high school students, and adult learners).
My methods are simple. I spend the first ten to twenty minutes of the first lesson discovering the particular arena in which the student has difficulty (it could be anything from preposition misuse to a lack of thesis to a misunderstanding of the assignment), after which I address that issue. Successful tutoring renders the tutor obsolete. I won't get the student an A on one paper; ideally, I will help them to have a greater understanding of both how to learn and how to express their understanding of the material in a way that can be applied to all future learning.
I hope to hear from you!
