I love to teach, to motivate students, to free their potential and help them raise their grades. With degrees from Cambridge and UCLA, and fifteen years' experience, I bring the highest academic standards to tutoring, no matter what age group or level of ability. Whether it's ESL or SAT English, reading or writing, Art History or World History, I specialize in making complicated ideas accessible, difficult words understandable, and distant events relevant to your experience.

I’m a skilled ESL tutor with a 95% GRE language score, and an experienced editor. Whether it’s an SAT test, a high school essay, a college term paper, a graduate thesis or an article, I can help you improve your grammar, tighten up your arguments and produce a coherent, well written paper.

I lecture at Cal State Long Beach and Antioch University. I teach Western Art History from prehistory to the present, and specialize in 18th - 19th century European art, and Islamic art and architecture. I put a strong emphasis on cross-cultural relations in art.

It may be that you’re having trouble with a particular aspect of English or Art History: spelling is a problem for you, or grammar is giving you nightmares; or you’re having trouble making sense of the endless string of art styles and periods. I assure you I can help you grasp these things and turn them into achievements.

Or maybe you feel that English just isn't your language, that it'll never be part of your identity. Or that Art History was actually written with someone else in mind — that it’s not part of your history at all. These are deeper issues with which I have a lot of experience, and I can help you address and engage with them in a way that enables you to take possession of skills and subjects that once seemed alien.

In the end the issue is, how to transform feelings of being overwhelmed — or just being at the beginning of what seems like a very long road — into a sense of capability and self confidence. As soon as we start talking about your aspirations, your real strengths and weaknesses, we can start talking in concrete terms about what steps to take to move you or your child or partner forward.

So contact me and let’s talk!

Art History

Art History

I have been teaching art history for fifteen years at universities, colleges and art schools in California, England, France and Morocco; I have been an Elderhostel instructor since 1995. I have tutored the subject since 2003, including grade school, high school, undergrad and graduate level students. My subject areas cover Western Art from prehistory to the present, especially Ancient Art, 18th & 19th Century European and American Art, Modern Art, Visual Culture, and Islamic Art & Architecture. I have a particular interest in cross-cultural relations, and I believe the history of art cannot be separated from the history of the societies and cultures that produce it. I have a BA from Cambridge, MA and PhD from UCLA.

English grammar and writing skills

I have tutored SAT, taught ESL, and had extensive editorial experience in journalism and academia. With a 95% GRE language score, I have written three theses and a PhD dissertation, and I can help you edit everything from a term paper to a dissertation or article.

I give writing tutorials for my art history undergrads, and my student evaluations reflect this commitment. I teach grammar, syntax and spelling; and how to develop, research and structure your paper.

I taught Upper Intermediate Level at Huntington Career College in LA, enlivening my classes with spontaneous performance and illustrations. I make a point of attending to the needs of individual students. I focus on grammar, comprehension, reading and writing, pronunciation, idiomatic English, and conversation-—including issues of concern to international students. My students have included business people, and several have gone on to business school, art school and university.

European History

European History

The social history of art requires a deep understanding of the social, economic and political history of the periods taught. In my case that includes European societies from earliest settlements to the present, with special emphasis on the empires and republics of the Ancient World, the rise of market-oriented urban societies in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and on the rapid and often troubled development of those societies from the industrial revolution to globalization--including the consolidation of nation states, the growth of international institutions, the rise and fall of empires, the emergence of mass cultures and the challenge of democracy.

With a BA from Cambridge, MA & PhD from UCLA, and a Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning from the internationally known Architectural Association in London, I bring to tutoring both a commitment to the highest academic standards and a comprehensive command of European history.

We learned French in high school (I'm English) and I've been traveling to France ever since, so I've got a pretty good accent and command of colloquial French. More formally, French was the main research language for my art history PhD at UCLA, and I have taught in French in Paris and Francophone Morocco, where I'm setting up an NGO.

Critical reading and comprehension skills have been an important part of my teaching practice in ESL and SAT English. With a 95% GRE verbal score and editorial experience, I'm well qualified for this work, but just as important, I believe, is finding material which stimulates and excites the student -- something that's really important to their life and their sense of self.

This is the key to wanting to grasp meanings, work through challenging passages, and recognize the direct advantage of highly developed reading skills to the student's life purpose and achievements.

World History

I've had extensive editorial experience since the early 70s, tutored SAT, taught ESL, and am currently coaching and editing an MA thesis in the grad art history program at Cal State Northridge. I regularly give writing tutorials to my art history undergrads at Cal State Long Beach, Antioch U and El Camino College, issuing them with guidelines for their Term Paper, Thesis Statement and Summary of Arguments. I have a strong grasp of English grammar, syntax and spelling, and a massive vocabulary. I wrote a 300-page PhD dissertation for the UCLA art history program (though admittedly half of these offerings are pretty much incomprehensible. I assure you mine was actually written in English).

A caring instructor, I provide writing tutorials for my art history undergrads at El Camino College, Antioch U and Cal State Long Beach. With degrees from Cambridge and UCLA, as well as editorial experience in journalism and academia, and a 95% GRE language score, I'm well qualified to provide this service to the many students who arrive in college without the necessary skills.
