Every student is unique, blessed with a singular learning style and way of seeing the world. With my background in academic and research psychology, I believe I am well-equipped to tap into the style, preferences, and ways of seeing the world that make each student who they are. I believe in active listening and dynamic tutoring. You can find me drawing and diagramming on a piece of paper or using as many metaphors or real-life examples as necessary to make a concept come alive.
My tutoring and teaching background:
I spent two years as an SAT instructor and private tutor for high school students through Revolution Prep in San Francisco. During my master's degree career, I tutored for the Athletic Department at Wake Forest University, where I worked with students at a variety of abilities. I tutored "Learning to Learn" and "Introduction to Psychology" for incoming college freshman.
My educational background:
As a National Merit Scholar, I earned two bachelor's degrees from the University of California, at Los Angeles: a B.S. in Psychobiology and a B.A. in English Literature. After a stint expressing the vocal musician in me as a master's degree student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, I honed in on research and experimental psychology. After two exciting and enriching years at Stanford University, I moved across the country to pursue my Master's degree in research psychology at Wake Forest University, where I was supported by a full-tuition scholarship. My thesis focussed on longitudinal change in autonomy and parent-child closeness among a sample of Asian-American high school students.
As a National Merit Scholar at UCLA, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature (one of my double majors). I read and studied the great masters of English and American Literature in concentrated depth and detail; in addition I produced many papers analyzing and interpreting those great works. My GPA was an "A" average at UCLA for my English Major.
I have a passion for literature, writing, and the English language. Combined with my philosophy of tailoring each tutoring session to match the individual's learning style, I believe I can help you improve in English!
I have an M.A. in research psychology. I have taken graduate level coursework in all major sub-disciplines of psychology as well as conducted my own empirical research on adolescent development. Psychology is my passion, and I love to communicate the concepts of this wonderful field!
I have extensive experience tutoring high school students for the SAT exam. I spent two years working with a prominent test prep company; there I taught SAT preparation in both the classroom and through one-on-one tutoring. I have a strong grasp on what critical reading strategies help a test-taker maximize their score. I helped improve one test-taker's score by as much as 700 points through our tutoring.
