If you desire to read, speak, write or sing with greater clarity and confidence, Rick can help you! If English is your, (or your child's), second language and you need help with reading comprehension, appreciation, scholarly and creative writing, vocabulary, vocal clarity, accent reduction and public speaking skills, Rick can help.
Good singing, written communication and quality public speaking are dependent on manufacturing and exuding an air of confidence. Rick can help you to learn the tools essential in gaining a confident personal voice and communicating ideas and emotions in effective and entertaining ways.
Learning how to use humor, musicality and storytelling will enhance your ability to communicate your message in the English language. Whether you are an ESL speaker, want to improve your public speaking, writing or performing skills, karaoke performances or just want to learn vocal production and acting for fun, Rick will dedicate his efforts in a personalized approach to improving your skills.
As a child he suffered from a rather distinct stutter and lisp, and with the help of an excellent speech pathologist for a remarkably short period of time, learned how to overcome these obstacles and eventually make a living as a professional actor and vocalist. Rick knows from personal experience about vocal production, how to achieve excellent diction and the proper use and placement of the lips, tongue, throat muscles and breath.
After a rigorous and demanding undergraduate education at Wabash College in Indiana, where he won scholarly and performance awards, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree, (and a perfect score on written comprehensives at The University of North Carolina/ Greensboro - a department first), Rick has been a working actor, teacher and clown in the South Bay/ Silicon Valley and the greater SF Bay Area, CA for over 25 years.
He has performed on stage, film, television, radio and for scores of corporate events. From mystery dinner theatre, improvisational theatre, children's theatre, commercials, feature films, jingles, voiceover and clowning, he has a wide variety of experience and a zest for life and sharing the joy of effective communication in both written and oral form.
Rick has taught students of all ages and abilities English, Shakespeare, stage, voiceover and on camera acting. With a liberal arts education, a minor in business psychology, and careers in Real Estate management, sales, marketing and professional theatre, he values the humanity in all types of people and truly enjoys the process of scholarly study, rehearsal and collaboration.
Highly musical, Rick has studied vocal production, opera, public speaking, voiceover and acting for animated, live, dramatic and comic characters. Although much more of an actor and comedian rather than a dancer, he has studied modern dance, jazz, tap, pantomime, stage movement and clowning and has been praised for his physical agility and quality of natural movement on stage.
Theatre is a particularly collaborative art form and the study of history, literature, storytelling, psychology, fashion, music and the plastic arts make it an exciting journey for all types of people. Even the disciplines of math, physics, technology and science can be explored through the magic of theatre and music.
I have taught Acting for the Camera and The Business of Show Business, Commercial Acting, and Voiceover for over 15 years to actors of all ages.
With a BA in Theatre, an MFA in Acting & Directing, and over 30 years of acting, vocal training, teaching and public speaking, Rick has the knowledge and experience to help students to communicate effectively using the tools of theatre. Acting techniques, storytelling, vocal clarity, humor and musicality are essential tools for public speakers to communicate clearly and capture an audience.
I have produced, directed, designed, crewed, marketed and acted in over 100 productions and have toured all over the US and to the South Pacific.
Rick has been singing and performing publicly since childhood. From church choirs and solos, to swing and show choirs, musicals and over 6 years of private vocal study with an opera coach formerly with the Metropolitan Opera, Rick has the experience necessary to assist students in finding their natural and unique voice.
Having acted professionally and taught for nearly 25 years, Rick has guided many students on how to "sell", interpret and communicate a song, develop a dependable, durable vocal technique, and move an audience. With experience in jingles and voiceover, he can help students discover the theatricality and storytelling aspects of a song as well as exercises in breathing, projection, diction and audition techniques. Since Rick is not an accompanist, focus will be on technique, interpretation and projection rather than pure musicianship. Students will work primarily with recorded music.
