I am always eager to help students. I have much patience and strongly believe in encouragement as well as positive reinforcement. The students and I will be a team, working towards the students' goals. With several years as a substitute teacher from 1991-2009, a voluntary English/writing tutor from 1991-2000, a strong educational background in history, and several published articles and book reviews, I am very competent in writing and history. Not only am I very competent in history (especially United States history), I have proven skills in writing and historical research. I am strong in writing essays (including the standard five-paragraph essay) and in research or term papers. I believe in quality research through (1) the use of both primary and secondary sources, and (2) the utilization of both footnotes and bibliographies. I thus do not rely chiefly upon the Internet, though it has some use. I can easily explain these techniques to students.
