Teacher, tutor, mom, I have been on all sides of it! I reach your student, reach out to their teacher, give tips to stay on it!!! Here's a short description of my teaching career.

My first teaching interview, nine years ago, I sat with the principal and without hesitation, I stated with both passion and humility,I am a multicultural, multilingual, multi-talented teacher”. I explained that I graduated from Xavier University in New Orleans, an inner city school that is both historically black and also a Catholic school. There, I studied Spanish Literature, Latino history and environmental and biological sciences. I earned a BA. Through Xavier, I studied in Cuba, and experienced the cultures of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Europe.

During that first interview, I urged the principal to add me to her staff as an English as a Second Language paraprofessional. Instead, she handed me a fledgling Spanish program in a rural elementary school with many high risk students, to nurture a new program entirely on my own. I built a challenging curriculum through technology, inspiration, collaboration and a heavy dose of “sí, se puede, you too can do this”. I managed other activities on campus including document and parent translation.

The next few years, I taught middle school Science in two inner city schools in Miami, with both gifted and inclusion classes. I was offered a position as the head sixth grade science teacher.

In 2011, I was hired as the first teacher in the Incarcerated Youth division of Alt. Ed. at my first school district in Hernando County, where I had started nearly eight years prior. I taught Math and Science in the county jail. I was invited back by Sgt. Dreschnack and received a compliment of “you could teach me a thing or two about math,” by my immediate supervisor Mr. Jim Knight.

In December of 2011, I relocated to California. Almost immediately, teachers and administrators at Oasis Community School, a school for high risk students, recognized that despite my petite stature, large smile and soft voice, I was “up to the challenge” and quickly I was their “go to teacher”, filling gaps in the students' Math and Science foundations. Ms. Debbie Livingston offered me a full time position.

I hope this note lends a little insight into what I am capable of. Thank you for your time.

ADD/ADHD

I taught middle school Science in two inner city schools in Miami with both gifted and inclusion classes. I was offered a position as the head sixth grade science teacher.
In 2011, I was hired as the first teacher in the Incarcerated Youth division of Alternative Education at my first school district in Hernando County, where I had started nearly eight years prior. I taught Math and Science in the county jail. I was invited back and received compliments.
In December of 2011, I relocated to California. Almost immediately, teachers and administrators at a school for high risk students recognized that despite my petite stature, large smile and soft voice, I was “up to the challenge” and quickly I was their “go-to teacher”, filling positions that were often turned down by other substitutes. Here's what the principal said about me. "It is with pleasure that I write this letter for Soleil G. She has been a substitute teacher at Oasis Community School about a year. I have watched her teaching on many occasions and it has been a pleasure watching her with our students. I wish I had an open position so I could hire her. She engages the students and lovingly holds them to her expectations.

Oasis Community School is a school for students who are in group homes, have been expelled and/or put on probation, or have chronic behavior problems. It can be a challenging place to teach, especially for a substitute teacher. Soleil has worked well with our students from her first day here, and we are always relieved if she is our substitute.

This year Soleil has been substitute teaching in our Special Day Class quite a bit. This class has many challenging students and the students can be hard to engage in learning. There is a wide range of ability levels in the class. Soleil keeps them all engaged in learning. The students get very excited when they get to have her as a substitute.

Soleil has been very reliable and flexible, being willing to work half days when she has a class in the afternoon, and also willing to switch classroom assignments when needed. She always has a smile on her face which is contagious for our staff and students.

Soleil is a very kind, reliable engaging teacher. I recommend her for any teaching position.

thank you.
