Hello, parents and students. My name is Eric, and I love to teach. I hold a BA in Modern Literature from UC Santa Cruz, and a Master's in Education from National University. In addition to working full-time as a tutor, I have over 500 hours of real-world teaching experience at the high school level as a substitute, coach, and student-teacher. I love history and writing, and I know the key to being an effective teacher is engaging one's students.

I am currently credentialed by California as a substitute teacher. I have passed the CBEST, as well as the CSET for Social Science.

I specialize in helping middle and high school students with History, Government, Geography, Psychology, English, Creative Writing, and SAT Writing. I work with students to manage their time, improve their academic skills, and complete challenging assignments.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have passed the Social Science CSET, which qualifies me to teach subjects such as US History, World History, & Government at the middle school and high school level. I have classroom experience as a US History & Psychology instructor, including curriculum development and lesson planning. I have tutored students at home in both US and World History, and helped them prepare for tests and complete essay assignments.

English

I work with middle and high school students to improve their writing in multiple formats (traditional English essays, literary analysis, and SAT preparation). I also work with students to improve their grammar, spelling, and vocabulary skills. Additionally, I help students identify themes and literary devices in fiction and poetry, and work with students to improve their reading comprehension.

Social Studies

I have passed the California CSET for Social Science. During my student teaching at a high school in Loomis, CA, I planned and taught US History for a full term. I have tutored students in US and World History from grades 7 through 12.

Study Skills

During the course of my tutoring and teaching, I have helped students with a range of academic skills and challenges to stay organized through the use of available technology resources, and through the development of key study skills, such as reading and note-taking strategies. I have worked with students with IEPs, and have designed action plans to help keep them stay organized and proactive. In addition, my MA in Education includes a focus on best practices.

Writing

In addition to graduating with a BA in Modern Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing from UC Santa Cruz, I have been helping students with academic writing for over three years as a teacher and private tutor. I have helped students edit and improve essays, prepare for the SAT Writing section, and complete countless other academic papers.

Improved Grade From B to A — Eric has been my son's English tutor since about a year ago. My son was in 9th grade, and had a B for his English class. Since we used Eric, I see my son's English grade improved from B to A- by the end of his 9th grade. Eric explained passages of difficult literature for my son and asked him questions after lecturing to make sure he would understand what they just talked about. He also helped my ...
