I got my first experience as a teacher in 1999, when I taught middle school at a Los Angeles Prep School. I taught religion, which, unfortunately, was a class no one wanted to take. The students told me that the topic bored them to death. I resolved then and there to make my class so interesting and enjoyable that the students would love it, whether they wanted to or not! At first it was difficult for me to figure out what part of religion might interest these kids, but I asked them a lot of questions and watched them carefully each time I exposed them to new material.
Over time I learned how to present material in a way that is interesting, because if the student has no interest in a subject, it is almost impossible to teach it.
I took a few years off to have a baby, and then I began working with a company named Ivy West, which hired and trained me as an SAT tutor. Eventually I left Ivy West to tutor privately. Since 2003, I have tutored all kinds of students - struggling first graders who needed creative solutions to help them learn phonics, high-achieving middle schoolers who wanted to hone their writing skills even further, and college grads applying to prestigious graduate programs who wanted help on the essay portion of their applications.
