Who am I?
I am a recent Miami transplant from New York City, who completed a Master's degree at Columbia University's medical campus. I have professional in-classroom teaching experience including two years as a high school teacher, a year as a university professor, and nearly ten years of experience working with teenagers and young adults. I provide tutoring services to all levels of students, including secondary, college and graduate students. My specialty is developing and improving writing skills, particularly editing. I love to work with all types of writing, and have served as a translator and editor for several published articles. I am particularly excited about the long-term, growing process of cultivating an argument in a thesis or final paper.
Where am I from?
Born in Moscow, I entered elementary school without knowing any English, and as an adult have lived in three Latin American countries. Fluent in 3 languages (Russian, English and Spanish), I can relate to the difficulty and euphoria of language learning. I began my university studies a year early, graduating with two majors (English and Psychology) and two minors (Spanish and Gender Studies). I have experience teaching English at the university level, and have served as a teaching assistant for several English and Psychology courses.
What's my tutoring style?
Helping the student understand the material (rather than just getting the right answer) is essential for building a strong foundation of knowledge. I am patient, supportive and encouraging; the outlook one has about learning is very important! I am happy to also help with study skills, test taking, vocabulary-building and other skills which strengthen writing and language abilities.
