Hi. My name is Brenda. I am a former college instructor who is currently a stay-home mom working part-time as a tutor with specialization in writing, editing, proof reading, short essays and social science content. I am best able to work evenings. I can do some days but prefer evenings.
My travel ability:
My location is Anaheim Hills. I have a child in school and have some child care availability for late afternoons. Please contact me for day time appointments. I have evenings available after 7pm.
Brief summary of educational history:
I have an AA from Orange Coast College, a BA in Criminology, Law and Society in the UC system, an MA / ABD status (which means I finished my Ph.D. program at a leading UC University but did NOT turn in my dissertation so I am stuck at the All But Dissertation phase forever) in Sociology at UC. I was a teaching assistant in Sociology at UC .... from 1998 through 2006. I also taught Sociology, Criminology, Deviance, Sociological Theory and Research Methods at several southern California universities and colleges between 2001 and 2008. I have graded thousands upon thousands of papers and helped students with their college papers since 1994 (when I was first employed as a tutor for the OCC tutorial center where I helped students in Algebra and essay writing).
Brief summary about my experience with learning deficits:
I have a non-profit special education advocacy organization that has suffered from the economic downturn. I have spent 10 years helping parents of disabled students get their children the educational assistance and interventions needed in the public school. In so doing, I have become an expert in reading disabilities, high versed in speech and language deficits, and intimately familiar with the spectrum of writing skill deficits as it pertains to the development of reading skills. This does not mean that all writers have reading deficits. What this means is that I am able to work with learning disabled individuals and have lots of tricks to help people overcome deficits in writing that come from my body of knowledge pertaining to reading instruction and learning disabilities.
A little about my experience editing papers:
I have a great deal of experience with ESL students and students who never really learned to write. I have had to assess writing skills, explain my assessment criteria, submit a formal report of my writing skills assessment, and present a plan of action for tutoring an ESL university student. I have been paid by a non-profit to tutor an ESL college student. I have been employed by a college tutorial center. I have been a paid copy editor for two university press books. I have worked with high school students, older returning students and graduate students helping them to write papers for classes and college entrance essays.
Content Area Specialization/ What Subjects Can I Teach?
If you are in classes in Sociology, Criminal Justice, Social Psychology, Deviance, Special Education, Basic Psychology, Research Methods, Research Projects, Sociology of Law, Criminology, I can help you with the expertise of a college instructor content expert. If you need help with psychometrics in psychology, I can help with the expertise I gained from education outside of my official coursework. I do read and interpret childhood disability diagnostic reports.
What can I do for you?
I can help someone take an idea and turn it into a grade "A" college course paper. I can take your best shot at an essay and turn it into something that will get you the grade you want. I can help with the writing of a graduate thesis and, in social science, comment on the structure and validity of content. I have defended a dissertation proposal and am competent to assist in dissertation editing.
How do I help people?
There is no one perfect method for tutoring and editing. When I help people with papers, I usually start by reading the paper or listening to the idea. Then, I usually get some information about what the person would like to accomplish (which includes reading a course syllabus, writing prompt or specific assignment). Next, I do a quick assessment of the writing deficits (when possible). FInally, I provide an oral overview of what I can do to help the student get to the "A" level and how long it will possibly take.
Why am I tutoring?
As I wrote this summary, I thought someone may ask "why is she tutoring?" The answer is that I cannot cart my beautiful daughter off to child care, 50 hours per week, for someone else to raiser my child while I take on a career. While work is important, I believe mothering is critical for the production of healthy human beings. Therefore, I am a tutor by choice because it allows me control over my own schedule.
Teaching versus editing:
The amount of writing instruction I am able to provide depends upon the amount of work a student has already done. If a student comes to me with a paper that has had some effort put into it, I am able to do some teaching. Already worked on essays provide the content I need to explain: 1) the level of writing competency demonstrated in the work, 2) the improvement we can make to the essay provided, and 3) provide instruction in the areas of deficit that produced the level of competency presented. On the other hand, students who come with an idea and want me to help them write an essay will not have time for instruction because I will spend my time in the creation of an essay.
What to bring:
Bring your paper on CD or a pin drive. Please note, I use a mac. I use .doc format for papers.
I do bring a lap-top and a pin drive. I do not carry a printer. I can take your paper and work on it in my computer, re-save your information to the drive or burn you a disk and give the student the electronic copy to print.
