Dave, born in Toronto, Canada, received his music education at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He began putting his poems to music and this led to his migration to California to seek recognition as a songwriter. He played with several music acts in the Bay Area in the 1970s/1980s and composed scores for the theater. Following the muse of poetry and fiction writing, he went to San Francisco State University and earned Creative Writing (English) degrees (B.A. Summa Cum Laude,‘93, M.A. 1995). He is published in several poetry journals, won a Thomas Merton Foundation’s Poetry of the Sacred prize, and was featured in the 9th Annual Berkeley Poetry Festival, 2011. He is included in an anthology of Bay Area poets, My Dreaming Waking Life (2009).
Though mainly of English/Irish ancestry, he is also descended from a great story telling family, the Debassiges of West Bay First Nation Ojibwe, notable on Manitoulin Island (Ontario) for preserving the history of their Ojibwe leaders, elders, and warriors for over 300 years. He tells the story in his book, Voyages to Ancestral Islands, which was awarded a Cultural/Literary award by Embassy International in San Francisco (September 2013). He is currently working on an American Indian history about the times before European contact and the changes that happened at first contact. Dave tutors my 12 year old son in English and Literature. Surprisingly with an added bonus, Dave also is very knowledgeable in History, Religion, and Piano! He is patient, kind, intelligent, and very thorough. After every lesson, Dave has written me very detailed account of how the lesson went, as well as suggestions on how my son can improve. My son likes to be challenged and has a tendency to get bored and disinterested if a tutor is too lenient or too easy to please. Dave seems to have a genuine interest in helping my son, as well as being very flexible. I feel very fortunate in finding him through WyzAnt. Thank you!
I cannot believe how lucky I am to have found Dave to be my piano teacher. He is the absolute best. My lessons with him are getting better all the time!! He makes learning so much fun with his confidence in me and his willingness to have me succeed. Thank you for your neverending patience! I will be signing up for another package with Dave! Thank you so much!
Dave is extremely knowledgeable. Gives great feedback on my progress. Corrects me where I need the attention. I am satisfied with my decision to take up private lessons. These lessons have brought me to a level where I will be able to keep up with instruction once my class at DVC begins in August.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently have a work in progress, a new perspective on American Indian history and Spiritual Traditions.
I frequently perform my poetry in public at SF Bay Area schools, elder homes, and cafe/restaurant poet readings. I also served my previous employer, Wells Fargo Bank, by giving speeches to employees about community service opportunities. As a result I have acquired good public speaking skills.
I studied Piano and Theory at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto Ontario Canada, and before that took examinations in their method up to Grade 10 Piano. I have taught Piano in private practice in Santa Rosa CA. Also currently perform in clubs and concert settings as a pianist for singer Chappell Holt.
I have been a member of a poets workshop, who self-published our anthology, for over seven years. We critique and proofread each others work at our monthly meetings.
I first gained a lot of public speaking experience at my previous employer Wells Fargo bank (I'm now retired). I was involved in their diversity program and won a Diversity Champion award in 2008. Thus I regularly spoke to our various departments (Payroll, Marketing, Retail) about service opportunities available in the community to volunteer and otherwise help local native peoples institutions, and encourage attendance at their events. I gave financial workshops to young entrepreneurs using Wells Fargo's Hands on Banking program. Presently, I am called upon to give talks in Native American history and culture for Gifts for the Imagination Salon held at Cafe Arrivederci, San Rafael CA; and Jannie Dresser's Poetry salons sponsored by her Sugartown Publishing company (references available upon request). I am a performing poet reading at various poetry events and clubs around the Bay Area and have won local prizes (2 Maggie H. Meyer awards) for my work.
Daniel Brady, poetry host at Sacred Grounds Café, San Francisco's longest poetry reading venue, commented that I, "presented a very good set of poems. He gave us a great feature, bringing in history, magic and life. [He has] a powerful voice and good perspective."
I studied Comparative Religion at the college level, though my degrees are in English. I have studied several sections of the Bible closely over many years. I have also read classics like the Dhammapada (Buddhism), The Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita (Hinduism), the Gospel of Thomas, the Book of Enoch, Chinese Daoist Chuang Tzu, and read the Tao Te Ching several times through. I have used this background to write for an online publication where there are about 40 columns I have authored about many topics in religion and interfaith, including also Native American spirituality, Sikhism, Judaism, etc. I have also taught classes in world religions at St. Michael's Episcopal Church and Unity Church.
I have an essay that will be published in the upcoming issue of Raven Chronicles, Seattle, WA.
