My name is Tommy and I would like to be your tutor. I specialize in all things English related but I am capable of teaching many different subjects including the Italian language and Photography.
In college I double majored in Psychology and Public Relations while continuing my passion for languages and photography. After college I moved to Italy to teach English as a second language to students of all ages. My youngest students were 3 years old and some of my oldest were in their 70s and 80s. Skill levels ranged from first exposure to the English language all the way up to English specifically for Biology and Marine Biology students of the University of Genoa in Genoa, Italy. I specialized in grammar, syntax and conversation but I also taught lessons on test preparations. I prepared students to take the Cambridge, Trinity and First Certificate exams. I also took 90 middle school students to England for a two week total language immersion course.
In my experience, I have found that the best way to help a student learn a new subject or concept is to be very enthusiastic and positive when presenting the material. Enthusiasm and positivity are necessary in addition, obviously, to a thorough knowledge of the subject at hand. I am very patient with my students and I feel this is very important for them to wrap their head around a concept. There has to be some push from the tutor but I believe that, for the student to fully grasp something, they must arrive at that understanding themselves instead of just being told. A tutor helps students along the way to that understanding while subtly giving encouragement, hints and patient guidance.
