I have taught in both public and private schools in both New York and California. I have a Life Credential in Multiple Subjects K-12 and adults, and a Life Reading Specialist Credential in both New York and California. I have also completed graduate level classwork towards earning a Preliminary Mild/Moderate Special Education Credential.
I have been a classroom teacher (elementary level), a reading specialist, a special education teacher, an ESL Specialist, and am currently a Community College Learning Assistance Instructor.
My specialty is in the area of Language Arts (Phonics, sight words, reading comprehension, spelling, and writing, as well as college level textbook reading for comprehension through the use of graphic organizers, vocabulary strategies, outlining, semantic mapping, venn diagrams and other techniques).
I like to informally assess the skills of people that I am working with by listening them to read, asking them questions about what they read, and asking them what they think are their difficulties. I encourage them to read the words in their head because this is how fluent readers read, allowing greater comprehension of what is read. I also like to have a writing sample to see what level the people I tutor are currently functioning at.
I enjoy working with children and adults, and people are usually very comfortable working with me.
