I am currently working as a long-term substitute teacher while I earn my teaching credential to teach middle school and/or high school math. I've taught math 7 and Algebra for months at a time while teachers were on maternity or administrative leave. Before that I worked with government-funded tutoring programs, bringing quality tutoring free of charge to lower-income families. Working with these programs has given me the opportunity to work with students who are 2,3, and sometimes even 4 grade levels behind in core subjects, especially math. My tutoring experience dates back to when I worked at an open tutoring lab at Southwestern College when I was 17.
I've worked on my craft as a tutor by trying to make math more understandable and simple. I've gotten really good at improvising using examples and stories, which usually evokes the "OH, that makes sense" response. As a substitute teacher, I've been able to help whole classes better understand fractions with my PIZZA and PEOPLE analogies. It is top secret, but it works every time.
I am able to empathize with students and their struggles in rudimentary math. I thoroughly understand the concepts that students have most difficulty with, and I have learned the best methods to overcome these deficiencies.
