Does your student struggle in understanding what they read and answering questions about a story they have just read? Do they seem to be poor test takers and struggle in multiple subject areas? Does your student have difficulty following directions? In conversation, do they often say things that do not make sense or say things that are not related to what you are talking about? When writing, do they struggle to come up with what to write, even if there is a writing prompt provided? Does their writing lack description?
Does your student have difficulty memorizing their sight words even though you review them often? Do they struggle in spelling simple words, even though you diligently study their spelling words with them and you know they have seen those words many times? Do they frequently misread words and not notice that they have misread them? Are they able to read a word on one page, but when they see the same exact word on the next page, they are unable to read it? Do they guess at words frequently when reading?
If so, I can help.
I am an experienced, committed and reliable tutor. I have been a tutor for 12 years and have helped hundreds of students in that time. Rather than focus on symptoms of academic problems, (i.e. having students read passages over and over to work on reading comprehension or having students do spelling or math facts drills) I use highly effective programs that get to the core, underlying issues that are causing academic struggles. These programs are based on more than 25 years of brain research. Students learn how to absorb and remember information for future reference instead of doing endless practice workbook pages or drills. I offer both one-on-one tutoring and group tutoring at a lower rate. I also have sibling rates if you have more than one student who needs academic help.
I am currently working towards a second bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders, so that I can become a Speech-Language Pathologist. I tutor Pre-K through 12th grade students in all subjects. I help students struggling with listening comprehension, speech, phonics, reading comprehension, spelling, writing, grammar, vocabulary, math, history, science, test-taking and study skills.
I have worked with many children who have speech-delays or language disorders. I use a program that helps students to develop their receptive and expressive language. My students have made great gains in the areas of conversation skills, vocabulary, ability to follow directions, ability to use correct grammar when speaking and overall language comprehension.
Over the years, I have helped many ESL students. I help my students by assisting them in understanding their schoolwork; promoting correct pronunciation when reading aloud; and working on vocabulary-building, reading comprehension and writing skills.
I have served as a learning coach for students who are homeschooling using the online public school academy, K-12. When using K-12, I prepare for lessons, teach lessons and help students with K-12 schoolwork. If you are looking to homeschool this school year, feel free to e-mail me with any questions and I would be happy to talk to you about how I can be a learning coach for your student as well.
I am very dedicated to helping students reach their full potential at school. I work very hard to ensure that my students improve their skills. At the first session, I give my students a pre-assessment test to find out what areas we need to focus on. Then I recommend certain materials based on each student's needs. These materials usually include research-based programs that are proven to improve academic skills.
I am currently preparing students for the rigorous Common Core curriculum which is being implemented in the public schools starting this school year. The programs that I use complement the Common Core and teach the student how to excel in logic, critical thinking, comprehension and written expression. After taking students through the research-based programs, I show them how to apply the techniques from the programs to Common Core material.
In addition to providing quality tutoring, I also like to establish communication with your child's teacher. I introduce myself as your child's tutor and then ask what they think we should be focusing on during tutoring sessions. This e-mail communication is important because we can find out exactly what the teacher thinks we should work on based on performance on classwork, homework and tests.
I am now offering online sessions via WyzAnt's new online tutoring platform and/or video chat. As a result of the clarity of the video chat, I am able to teach these sessions exactly as if I were sitting next to the student. I am able to teach the specialized programs that I use and even provide homework help via online methods. My online students really enjoy their online sessions because they are low-pressure and utilize technology such as the iPad or computer. Middle schoolers and high schoolers especially like tutoring online. Online tutoring is great for out-of-area students who really need the specialized programs that I offer, but are too far away for me to come to their homes. Many of my online students participate in several extracurricular activities so online tutoring works well for them due to their time constraints. We meet in person for the pre-assessment and for the first few sessions and then transition to online tutoring. For local clients, I often do a mix of in-person and online tutoring.
If you have any questions about the programs I use, homeschooling or online tutoring, please feel free to send me an e-mail.
Thank you for your time,
I have a lot of experience teaching ADD/ADHD students. Several of my family members have ADD/ADHD and I am very familiar with the needs of these types of students. I have been a tutor for over ten years and have helped many students who struggle with ADD/ADHD issues. I use a specialized program that helps these students to focus and I use several different techniques that help those with ADD/ADHD.
I have been a professional tutor for ten years and have been working with children on the autism spectrum for 7 years. In the last two years, I have begun to work with these children in regards to their academic skills. I use two highly successful programs to help these students with oral language (expressive and receptive vocabulary), listening comprehension and reading comprehension. As a result of these programs, the students have also improved their writing and grammar skills.
I use several highly successful programs to improve my students' reading and spelling skills. These programs teach phonemic awareness, reading, reading comprehension, spelling, grammar and writing. These programs work, even if the school has been unable to teach the child how to read using conventional methods. These programs were designed with dyslexics in mind, so they can learn these essential skills in the way that works for them.
I am familiar with the needs of dyslexic children. I also use many multi-sensory activities, such as use of manipulatives and other hands-on methods with my dyslexic students because this is the best way for them to learn.
I have 11 years of experience working with Pre-K through 6th grade children. I have tutored in all subjects, including homework help. I have helped many children improve their academic skills. I begin with a pre-assessment test so that I can determine which academic program the student needs to go through. I can also communicate regularly via e-mail with the student's teacher in order to ensure that we are focusing on the right concepts.
I have helped Pre-K through 6th grade students improve in the areas of reading, spelling, writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, study skills, test preparation, history, science and math.
I have helped ESL/ESOL students learn English for over nine years. I worked for the Pomona Unified School District teaching English to ESL/ESOL students and I have also tutored many ESL/ESOL students one-on-one. We work on English speaking, grammar, vocabulary, reading, reading comprehension, spelling, writing and phonics. I have worked with several students who had very limited English skills and have helped them to be able to converse, read and write at a proficient level. I use successful reading, writing and phonics programs to help improve English skills as well as practice workbooks and hands-on activities.
I have over 7 years of experience teaching phonics to children who are in Pre-K through 6th grade. Much of my experience is in teaching Pre-K students how to read. I use phonics workbooks, flashcards, charts and other materials to help students improve their phonics skills. I also stress the importance of reading to young children in order to improve their skills. Depending on the age and skill level of the child, I will read to them and with them to help them gain confidence.
One of my students started tutoring with me when he was 4. In no time at all, he was reading short words. Today, he is one of the top readers in his kindergarten class. One of his recent reading tests had a goal of 8 points. He scored 60 points on that test.
Whether your child is a new reader or a student who is struggling with phonics, I can help to improve their skills.
In my 10 years of tutoring, I have worked with several students who have special needs. One of the main special needs that I encounter is speech delays. Many of my speech delayed students have a language disorder. They have a limited vocabulary and limited language comprehension (understanding what people are saying). I use a specialized program to help speech delayed children to improve their expressive and receptive vocabulary. This program also improves language comprehension and helps the student use correct grammar when speaking. I am also very familiar with the special needs of children with autism and Aspergers. I have used this same language comprehension program to help autistic children increase their expressive and receptive vocabulary. I have used a different program with Aspergers students to improve their reading comprehension skills.
Since students who struggle with study skills often struggle in multiple subject areas, I use a general comprehension program to help students to first understand what they are studying. This program also works on recall skills, vocabulary-building, note-taking, and written expression.
I was trained to teach this program by Lindamood Bell Learning Processes, the leaders in the field of remedial instruction. I have attended their conferences and workshops in order to learn how to better help students struggling with study skills. I have been a tutor for 12 years and have seen great success using this program with a variety of students.
As we progress through the program, I teach the student to summarize and synthesize large amounts of information that is presented to them in their textbook. We start by reading short passages and progress to chapters in their textbooks.
I have found this particular program to be very beneficial for those students who seem to have difficulty remembering dates, facts and details from passages or chapters. The program teaches the student how to understand and absorb information from any subject. Most importantly, the student is more likely to remember the information when it's time to take their test.
