As a teacher, my objective is to impart information and knowledge as well as be a useful resource for students to achieve their goals. Specifically, as a writing tutor, I expose students to a variety of sentence structures, challenge them to tackle the problems with sentence structure, and construct solutions to problems in plagiarism, grammar, syntax, organization, diction, or content. As a math and science tutor, I simplify complexity and interpret the equations with the student using algorithmic, step-by-step methods. I also emphasize sufficient practice to instill the confidence and speed of the student.
From personal experience, I have discovered that the magic of learning happens during intellectual stimulation through discussions and classroom interaction. I have learned to cope with different student styles and reach out to their current level of writing in order to enable them to see the various ways to improve the overall effectiveness of their writing and communication styles. My teaching method of improving student’s writing skills and abilities stems from the philosophy that students must experience the gravity of engaging in the writing process themselves in order to receive correction and elevate their point of view on a topic, applying critical thinking from multiple perspectives. My approach to the writing process is one that is a practical, innovative, and heuristic from the most acclaimed resources available.
Math is also a subject I tutor by clarifying and emphasizing the importance of detail in the calculating procedures of practice problems. I challenge students to approach their textbook with an open mind and incorporate logic and application of critical thinking to have every single question answered.
Science is the subject that requires memorization as well as application. By verbally rehearsing material and operating upon knowledge, a consolidated knowledge framework will ensure solid performance on exams.
As a Humanities major of the College of Letters and Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, I was required to write several analysis papers on various topics, ranging from a historical comparison of diverse cultures to medical sociological concepts, physiology essays, as well as critiques of authors in literature. Several professors have recommended my writing level as superior to their standards. Through exploring the world of Asian cultures, including Chinese archaeology, contemporary and traditional Korean society, music of India, and Vietnamese cinema, I was able to step out of the boundaries of my own heritage and garner an open-minded perspective toward global relations and contemporary issues.
By committing the necessary hours to master the material thoroughly and intricately, students will be able to improve their grades and knowledge base on an entirely different level. Most importantly, a fundamental understanding and basis for application in context is the mechanism and strategy for improving test performance. My services are designed to make the learning process systematic, efficient, and enjoyable. In addition to building a firm foundation of knowledge on the subject, the habit of repetition and review will enhance the students' long term memory that will facilitate the road to the maximum results at levels of higher learning. The highest leverage of approach is prevention of failure by conscientious learning.
I believe in a learning environment that is responsive to its surrounding in a given class setting. I begin with the belief that every student is capable of reaching an objective with the appropriate guidance and support. Therefore, my teaching methodology involves the student to actively participate in informed discussions to expand the scope of one’s predisposition toward a subject matter. My goal is to provide service not only to meet the needs of individual students at various levels, but also the needs of the college as a whole. I incorporated my personal experience in a multicultural environment while studying at a largely populated university and teaching for five years at a private SAT prep institution called Master Academy, which included SAT II Math, Writing, and Critical Reading. I am committed to making the students’ initiative to seek help in improving their writing as well as math and science skills a worthwhile decision. By assisting students to utilize media sources, libraries, and various technology aids, I envision students not only discovering the phenomenal feeling of fulfillment that I experienced, but also finding value in the essence of learning.
