When I left teaching I found that I missed working with students. I have always loved teaching math, and particularly missed helping students discover their math abilities.
My teaching experiences include many grade levels, from elementary to college, and I have taught many subjects. It is a joy to help students learn to love math, discover that they can read and write, and find learning to be the same life-long wonder it has always been for me.
As a high school student I starting teaching children by giving piano lessons long before receiving my Ph.D in music education and music theory from Michigan State University. After teaching music for several years I started a family and consulted with the Nevada Department of Education while raising my two girls. I am also certified and have taught in special education, elementary education, middle and high school. In 2001, I was awarded National Certification, a distinction that required an examination process as well as detailed scrutiny of my teaching methods by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. I have done additional graduate study in literacy and have taught in special programs for reading, writing, and spelling instruction. I look forward to working with students in elementary and middle school grades.
In my consulting work as well as my years in teaching, I have worked with many students with ADD/ADHD and their families. I know the challenges that face these students in the classroom and have found successful techniques to assist them in focus, organization, and completion of assignments. In my years teaching special education I taught students with serious attention difficulties, helping them develop skills for achievement and growth.
I am certified in special education and have worked with students with Aspergers in both special ed and regular classrooms at many grade levels. I also served as Chairman of the Coalition for Handicapped Children's Education and consulted with the Department of Education in Nevada , affording me an opportunity to work closely with families of children with special needs.

I have done graduate studies in literacy development as well as math. Literacy research was conducted in my classroom, and I received a literacy award.
I have years of experience teaching both elementary and middle school math. Math is a subject I enjoy very much, and I love to find ways to make it enjoyable for my students. In addition to the many materials I have for my students, I have made it a practice to continue frequent math training, as well as keeping up on current teaching practices. My years working as a middle school math teacher were most rewarding due to the growth in learning and love of math that I observed in my students. I have materials and techniques that assist in the development of math skills, helping students find methods that work for their individual style. My students were surprised to discover that math could be so much fun, and those who struggled in the beginning found themselves enjoying their work and personal growth. I have experience working with students at all levels of learning, and enjoy the challenges each individual student can bring.
During my years working as an elementary school teacher I taught in several after-school and summer reading programs. These research-based programs were designed to increase the literacy skills of students based on testing and assessment. I have done graduate seminar work in literacy and received an award for literacy research conducted in my classroom. My experience also includes presentations in various areas of literacy development.
My experience in various reading tutoring programs involved extensive work in spelling development. A spelling research study was conducted in my classroom and extended to other classrooms. My graduate work in literacy included seminars in spelling development, and I have extensive experience with assessment and materials for spelling, as well as working with leading researchers in this area of study. I have done presentations on spelling assessment and development, and have successfully taught spelling in my classes for many years.
My teaching experience includes years of assisting students improve their study skills. I have techniques to share across the curriculum that assist students in developing personalized organizational skills, study techniques for taking notes, writing reports, studying for exams, and more. Individual learning styles and modalities can help a student unlock their knowledge for better achievement and success.
Teaching vocabulary has been a large part of my curriculum for many years. My graduate and classroom work in literacy has helped my develop a background in vocabulary usage throughout the curriculum. In my teaching I use vocabulary to enhance student understanding of subject matter, but also, to increase overall understanding of language and word development.
