I began teaching over 20 years ago while getting my Masters Degree in Mathematics. I assisted professors by instructing their classes and by helping individual students in a tutoring lab with their coursework that covered everything from elementary-level math thru algebra & geometry up to calculus & statistics.
Since graduate school, I've been working as a software tester where the bulk of the work includes taking complex problems and breaking them down into simpler problems to solve.
I take this same approach with my students, i.e., I teach them how to take a challenging problem and then simplify it into smaller, workable problems.
There is no greater joy for me than freeing a student from whatever frustration that is keeping them from understanding a problem and then helping them feel confident that they can independently do the work.
I try to build up the student's confidence in math and then patiently teach them what they need to meet their goals and beyond.
