I first started tutoring algebra while I was in 6th grade & have tutored on and off since then. I enjoy tutoring a variety of subjects but excel in math, especially statistics. Most of the students that I have tutored were failing when they first came to me & they all passed their classes with my help.

Additionally, I found out when I was 40 that I have dyslexia & since then have not only conquered my own academic obstacles in English, but have been able to assist others in overcoming their learning challenges due to learning disabilities. Reading

I specialize in teaching reading and spelling to those who struggle. I use Lindamood-Bell LiPS, Barton Reading & Spelling, and Wilson Reading. The curriculum is specific for those with dyslexia but is effective for others as well. Phonics

I use Lindamood-Bell's LiPS (Phonemic Sequencing)curriculum & Barton Reading & Spelling (an Orton-Gillingham method to teach reading and spelling that starts with phonemic awareness). I am also trained in Wilson Reading (also an Orton-Gillingham method).

For students that struggle with phonics, starting with phonemic sequencing/awareness is a critical component to their successful mastery of decoding words and spelling.

Study Skills

I specialize in study skills for the chronically disorganized.

I use multisensory techniques (necessary for those with ADHD & dyslexia) and customize the coaching based on the individual student's needs.

As a person with ADHD & dyslexia, a mother with two children with ADHD & dyslexia and a full-time tutor since 2004, I have extensive experience in assisting students with study skills that work.

Special Needs

Dyslexia is a frustrating disorder & affects much more than just language, it affects math, all learning, and self-esteem. Additionally, there are related disorders of dysgraphia, dysnomia, dyscalculia, and AD/HD. ALSO, it brings insight and the ability to think outside the box, and an indefatigable energy (which drives other people crazy).

Most of my life I have worked in the field of education even when I had a "day job". As a former academic adviser & a member of a family where everybody goes to college, I have a lot of insight in how to plan for college. Additionally, I have experience dealing with the students with learning disabilities and negotiating disabled student services & accommodations in the college environment.

Dyslexia

I use LiPS (Lindamood-Bell's Phonemic Sequencing curriculum) and (since 2004) the Barton Reading & Spelling curriculum (an Orton-Gillingham based systemic multisensory program) to remediate dyslexia.
