Throughout college I have worked in a variety of tutoring experiences. As a freshman, I worked with the Foundation for Education Program (F4ED). F4ED works with students in an advanced math program to help them foster important math concepts. After working two quarters I was promoted to Assistant Team Lead which gave me a greater leadership role at the schools where I worked. As a sophomore I worked with BUILD. BUILD is a nonprofit in East Palo Alto that fosters entrepreneurial skills in high school students. The program also had a scholastic component where the student completed their homework for which I was a tutor.
My most recent tutoring opportunity was with College Track located in East Palo Alto. College Track is an after school program that helps to encourage students to go to college and exposes them to college culture. Three times a week I worked with students in different subjects including Algebra, Spanish and World Studies. One reason I love tutoring is the different types of students I get to work with. I think one skill that I use with the students on a daily basis is trying to make the material relatable to their life. In subject like math, exponential growth is not as exciting as finding out how banks calculate interests on an account. When the subject matter can be applied to their everyday life, it makes it much easier to remember the information.
