Memories from my childhood include many, many evenings watching my parents grade papers and make lesson plans. Both of them were teachers - one of history and religion, and the other for gifted Elementary students. Eventually, I was brought in to help grade and build lesson plans. I used to get a huge kick out of getting to know each student by their homework and following their progress. Looking back, I know this is why I have a deep fondness for tutoring and teaching.
I earned by BA in Language with an emphasis of Spanish and French from the University of California at Riverside. I studied Spanish in Santiago, Chile, at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile - Chile's premier university - where I researched Spanish literature and culture. I also completed many advanced French courses in conversation, French linguistics and have stayed a significant time in France.
My studies required a mastery of grammar, vocabulary, reading and language usage comprehension. I have helped many ESL learners gain understanding of English, and many English speakers learn Spanish and French with my background.
My tutoring and teaching style is communicative. I place emphasis on developing the ability to articulate ideas. I also stress vocabulary expansion, reading comprehension and individualized study practices. My ultimate goal is to help my students gain skills and to feel empowered and confident, not overwhelmed. I believe that anyone can learn anything as long as they are dedicated to the process.
