Hello parents of preschool, Pre-K and kindergarten students! My name is Heather. I taught Pre-K in Montgomery County, Maryland using state and county school system curriculum to prepare my students for a solid start into kindergarten. My family recently moved to San Diego County, and I took this year off from teaching to help get my family acclimated to our new location. I intend to go back to teaching next year.
As an early elementary school teacher, I recognize that children learn through play. As a tutor I take that knowledge to create short lessons that capitalize on your child's interests to teach pre-literacy and math skills and to find interesting and creative ways to enhance both fine and gross motor skills. As a mom and teacher, I recognize that each child is unique. I will strive to find your child’s interests so they can be utilized in our learning time together. We can work together to set a strong foundation with the mastery of colors, letters, shapes, and numbers. As your child grows more confident, we can begin working on more pre-literacy, writing and math skills to help prepare your child for kindergarten and beyond. The work your child and I do will be very hands on. For example, we might use playdough or shaving cream to form the shape of letters, or build different sized Lego towers to practice number recognition. Worksheets will be used to supplement this play-based learning, but will not be the focus of my time with your child.
Many parents are concerned about the large class sizes of kindergarten classrooms. I can work with your kindergarten-aged child by providing additional one-on-one time to enhance their reading skills and writing skills as well as their math skills.
As always, my focus is learning through play, but the results are clear in the progress shown through periodic formal assessments.
Does this sound like something that would interest you? I would love the opportunity to speak with you about your child and your goals for him.
