Most of us, when we take a class, feel that we know the material, but we struggle expressing what we've learned to the assignments and tests used to evaluate out knowledge. Having taught at universities and community colleges for the last 15 years, I've written multiple choice and written exams, and assembled documents for primary source based essays in History, Film and Ethnic Studies, and a variety of social science related courses. As a result of this experience I can explain the objectives that instructors use when they design the student evaluation process. In response I've developed brainstorming techniques and organizational exercises that can help you or your child reconcile the content that you know to the tests that are being used to measure your achievement. While my teaching experiences are on the higher education level, my exercises are adaptable to middle and high school courses, as well as to preparation for state and nation wide standardized tests. When students come to my session having caught up on the readings and lectures, I can make that preparation show up on their assignments.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

American History involves studying changes to U.S. social, political, and economic institutions over time. My background and teaching experience for the last 14 years has mostly concentrated in these subjects as they pertain to the West, urbanism, popular culture, and race. My tutoring approach emphasizes monitoring a student's comprehension of readings and lectures and setting goals for timeliness and quality in completing class assignments. I also use standardized test questions and essays to develop strategies for mastering materials used to evaluate student progress. I also proofread and can help with researching, formatting, and thematically developing of research papers.

College Counseling

As a part time college instructor, I have particular insight as to how students can best present a positive image of themselves in their college essays. Having taught writing, I can provide assistance in helping students construct a compelling narrative that communicates the value that they could bring to an institution of higher learning. Having had 14 years of experience as an adjunct faculty member, I am uniquely qualified to answer specific questions related to campus life.

Film

I have a background in film history and theory, and have written several articles on the development of African American cinema, and have taught a television based course on movies and their relationship to American society. I have also served as an historical consultant on several feature film and television productions.

Government & Politics

The strengths of any democracy rests on the good will of knowledgeable citizens. As a tutor my job in promoting responsible citizenship is to monitor a student's progress in completing school tasks in a timely manner, and set, evaluate and initiate steps to improve results based on pre-arranged goals and expectations. I also utilize test materials so as to more effectively manage time and other issues relating to the mechanics of the evaluation process. I will also proofread, format, and help with the research and in outlining the thematic elements of term papers and other written examinations.

Literature

The health of a society is not only measured in its economy, but in the vitality of its culture. The study of a nation's language provides an understanding of the nature of a civilization's soul. As an instructor in History, I've always assigned student essays that examine literature so as to better understand the inner lives within the societies that they read about. My overall tutoring strategy emphasizes monitoring the timely completion of projects, and establishing, measuring, and evaluating specific goals in reading comprehension, literary analysis, and writing ability. I would also proofread, help format, and assist in the overall research and thematic development of papers and essays.

Public Speaking

Throughout high school and college I participated in debate and other public speaking events. I was also runner-up in the State Lion's Club Oratory and Extemporaneous speaking tournament in my Senior Year of High School. After graduation I coached my old high school team. Most of the novice teams I taught won their respective debut tournaments. Currently I judge tournaments on North San Diego County.

Reading

Reading skills provide the building block for all future learning. Without this foundation, the ability to understand Math, English, and other languages is compromised. As a community college instructor in the Liberal Arts, I've taught many students the skills necessary for focusing their attention to the important themes in reading materials, and how to effectively communicate through speech and writing. I look forward to helping students in all grade levels learn the important tricks of the trade necessary to effectively navigate the prose found in all sorts of scholastic reading, from literature and text books.

World History

World History involves studying changes to the economic, social, and political foundations of civilization over time. In the last 14 years I've concentrated on teaching how and why these changes occur on the college level, and I feel that I have a good grasp on the subject. My tutoring approach emphasizes monitoring a student's comprehension of reading and lectures and setting goals for timeliness and quality in completing class assignments. I also use test questions from past AP tests to develop strategies for increasing test scores. I also proofread, and can assist in the researching and development of research papers.

Writing

Written communication is an essential skillfor getting students into a good college or graduate school. In this era of school testing, teachers no longer have the time to give individual guidance in improving the style, grammar, and substance to the essays that they assign to their students. Over the years as a community college adjunct (and published author) I've developed formulas for composing essays that deliver scholarly information with precision and clarity, and I look forward to sharing these techniques with your family.
