I had the good fortune of teaching and tutoring Special Education for 23 years in Central Ohio. With my Master's from Ohio State, I was certified for School Counseling and
permanently certified for Learning Disabled, Developmentally Handicapped and Severe Behavior students. These included students at all grade levels K-12. Autistic and other
labels were part of this student mix. My most successful teaching and tutoring occurred, because I was able to establish an excellent student-teacher relationship that was based on a mutual desire for success and continuous improvement to spark a stronger interest in learning. My students, mostly at the middle school level, thrived because they never failed, but began to learn from their own mistakes and lost their fear of making them. Whatever method worked was my motto and I enjoyed the successes and the errors. Real Life skills and Reading were the foundation and Math was easily taught. Creating a small business in the classroom and paying students token dollars for their efforts and attitudes was rewarding and allowed them to buy at auction, donated items and to buy classroom privileges.
I was a Teacher Leader and Mentor. As a Family Intervention Specialist, I was able to motivate and inspire failing and truant students to succeed and families to focus on behaviors that improved relations. I look forward to the opportunity to involve any student and family in this successful process.
